GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College dropped a North Coast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon to The College of Wooster. The Ladies (13-14-1, 2-6 NCAC) fell in the opener 9-1 before losing 6-5 in the second contest. The losses moved Kenyon's recent skid to six straight games. Additionally, it was the just the third time since 2001 that the Ladies were swept by the Fighting Scots.
GAME ONE
Wooster pitcher Maddy Chase turned in a solid performance in the circle and got enough run support through the first five frames to help build a lead over Kenyon. The Fighting Scots then scored five runs in the final two innings to earn a comfortable win.
After jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first, the Fighting Scots moved ahead 3-0 in the third when Stephenie Little hit a two-out, two-run double to right field.
In the fifth, Little sent a shot to left field which was misplayed and allowed Chase to score.
Down 4-0, Kenyon got on the board in the home half of the fifth as freshman
Austen Whibley hit a two-out single scoring
Madi Maldonado. It was the only scoring of the game for the Ladies.
The final two frames saw the Fighting Scots' lead balloon to 9-1 as Marissa Gorvet had run-scoring singles in the sixth and seventh while Little smacked a three-run home run in the final inning.
Chase earned her ninth win of the season tossing a complete game, scattering five hits, allowing no earned runs and fanning five batters. Little and Bridget Serrurier led Wooster's offense with three hits each while Little drove in five runs.
Whibley struck out six batters in defeat while also adding two hits. Maldonado had two hits as well.
GAME TWO
Kenyon nearly rallied in the latter parts of the game before a flyout at the left-center fence ended the game at 6-5.
Wooster once again seized control of the contest early as they went up 6-0 through the first three frames. In the first, Jenna Kendall had an RBI single up the middle and Little added a single to right center plating Serrurier. The second inning brought six consecutive singles for Wooster as Chase, Serrurier and Kendall each drove in base-runners. Linea Brouse delivered the final run for the away team with a sacrifice fly in the third.
After that though, Whibley, who came into the affair in the second, was fantastic in the circle. She held the Fighting Scots scoreless in the fourth through seventh innings giving the Ladies a chance to get back into the game.
In the fifth,
Amanda Coyle reached on a fielder's choice which brought in
Sophie Silberman. That made the count 6-1.
Jane Ghublikian followed in the next plate appearance with an RBI double to bring the score to 6-2.
An inning later, Kenyon erupted for three more runs. Silberman hit a two-out two-bagger which scored
Molly O'Connor and
Sylvie Thomas and
Danielle Elizarraraz capped off the scoring with a run-scoring single.
Then in the seventh,
Lindsey Susolik hit a two-out single to get on base. But in the next at-bat, Whibley's fly ball to left center fell just short of being a walk-off homer and instead fell into the glove of Wooster centerfield Jamie Kenyon.
In the circle, Whibley tossed six complete innings, allowed just one run and struck out six batters with no walks. Offensively, Silberman and Elizarraraz each had two hits.
Kenyon will look to snap its losing skid tomorrow when they host Ohio Wesleyan University for an NCAC doubleheader at 1 p.m.
Freshman Sophie Silberman went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in during Kenyon's second game against Wooster.
The Ladies fell though in the NCAC doubleheader moving their recent skid to six games.
