MEADVILLE, Pa. –
Kat Englert scored nearly half of Kenyon College's goals Saturday afternoon in a 16-14 victory at Allegheny College in a North Coast Athletic Conference women's lacrosse game at Frank Fuhrer Field. The Ladies had built a nine-goal lead (14-5) more than midway through the second half before the Gators made it interesting towards the end.
The Gators opened the game strong as they took a 3-0 lead nearly six minutes in. Jackie Morrow scored twice for the home team in that span. But the Ladies shook off the slow start and answered with five straight goals of their own.
Freshman
Cassie Hudson-Heck got the first goal of the game from
Allie McLane at the 23:33 mark. Englert then followed with four consecutive goals by herself to help the Ladies go ahead 5-3 with 15:39 to play in the half. Kenyon never lost the lead and took an 8-4 advantage into halftime.
Second-half action was nearly all Kenyon more than 15 minutes in. With a four-goal lead, Englert moved the visitors ahead 9-4 after she was assisted by
Kelley Russell at 23:51. The Gators responded with a goal 21 seconds later before the Ladies seized control.
Jane Symmes scored the next Ladies goal and the 5-0 spurt was capped off by Hudson-Heck's 35th goal of the season pushing the score to 14-5 Kenyon.
The seemingly insurmountable deficit didn't faze the Gators though as they closed the second half strong. With around 14 minutes remaining, they began to chip away at the Kenyon lead.
At the 5:21 mark, the Gators found themselves down by three after (14-11) after Shelby Piper scored. Piper pulled the contest to three again (15-12) with fewer than three minutes left before
Jane Symmes tallied her 40th goal of the season at the 1:12 mark. With a 16-12 lead, the Ladies allowed two more Gators goals but no more would come as Kenyon held on for a 16-14 win.
Allie Dumas recorded seven saves as Kenyon matched its win total from a year ago during today's victory.
Next up for the Ladies is their home finale against Hiram College on April 27 at 5 p.m.
Sophomore Kat Englert scored seven times on Saturday as the Ladies knocked off Allegheny 16-14.
It was tied for the most goals scored in a single game this season by Englert.
