GAMBIER, Ohio – In Monday's non-conference softball doubleheader with the Capital University Crusaders, the host Kenyon College Ladies amassed a total of 20 hits. That number, however, didn't translate to runs. Kenyon left a total of 21 runners stranded on base and suffered defeats of 7-1 and 8-5.
The games were Kenyon's final home games of the season and the losses dropped the Ladies' overall record to 15-20-1. The team will finish off its 2016 slate with conference doubleheaders at Hiram College tomorrow and at DePauw University on Saturday.
Kenyon scored four runs in the sixth inning of game two and had a chance to split the doubleheader, but Capital cranked a pair of two-run homers in the top of the seventh to secure the sweep.
Trailing 4-1, the Ladies got the sixth-inning rally started with a leadoff double from
Molly O'Connor.
Nicole Horita singled to right field and O'Connor scooted to third. When Capital decided to change pitchers, Horita stole second and
Amanda Coyle slapped a double through the left side that scored both O'Connor and Horita.
Jane Ghublikian then launched a double to the left centerfield wall that scored Coyle and tied the game at 4-4.
Later in the inning, with two outs,
Grace Pilz flipped a single to right field that scored Ghublikian and gave Kenyon a 5-4 lead.
Needing just three outs to claim victory, the Ladies couldn't seal the deal. Capital roughed up Kenyon starter
Austen Whibley for four runs on five hits in the seventh inning. Two of those hits were two-run homers from Therese Becker and Kristen Mellott, the sixth and eighth hitters in the Crusaders' lineup.
Surprisingly, the bottom of Capital's order did the majority of the damage in game two. The Crusaders' sixth through ninth hitters accounted for a .733 batting average (11-for-15) with seven runs scored and seven RBI.
Kenyon had 13 hits in game two. Ghublikian was 3-for-4.
Madi Maldonado and O'Connor were 2-for-3 and Pilz and Horita were 2-for-4.
With the exception of Horita, Kenyon's offense wasn't quite as dynamic in game one. Horita did go 3-for-4, but the rest of the team was just 3-for-25 against Capital starter Amber Martinelli, who ended up pitching 12 innings on the day.
The Ladies' only run of game one came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Horita singled up the middle to start the inning and then
Danielle Elizarraraz ripped a triple down the right field line to plate Horita.
Horita finished the doubleheader 5-for-8 with two runs scored.
On the mound for Kenyon,
Elizabeth Ovieda pitched four innings and took the loss in game one. Whibley finished off that first game and then went all seven in the game-two loss.
Nicole Horita went 5-for-8 at the plate and stole a base Monday, but the Ladies wound up
stranding a total of 21 runners and were the victims of a doubleheader sweep by the Capital Crusaders.
