HIRAM, Ohio – Pitching led the way in a 3-0 game-one win and then the bats took over during a 12-2, rain-shortened game two as the Kenyon College Lords baseball team swept a Wednesday doubleheader from the Hiram College Terriers. The two wins pushed Kenyon's streak to ten straight games, the program's best mark in more than 50 years.
Kenyon's previous best win streak was seven games, a run achieved four times over the last ten seasons. It is unclear, however, if the current ten-game win streak is a program record, since accurate game-by-game results are unavailable prior to the 1965 season.
Despite the chill in the air, game one was all about red hot sophomore starter
Jesse Bogacz. He pitched a complete-game, seven-inning shutout by allowing just three hits and four walks. He struck out nine, improved his season record to 2-0 and dropped his earned run average to 2.67.
Bogacz was a little shaky in the first couple innings. He gave up three of his four walks in that span and had to work out of a bases-loaded jam in the first. He did, however, settle down after that and allowed only singles in the third, fourth and sixth innings. Over the last five frames, he retired 15 of the 18 batters he faced.
Like Hiram, the Kenyon offense struggled in game one, but it did capitalize on a few walks in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth,
Alec Manning led off with a walk. He moved to second on a bunt single by
John Nahra and advanced to third on a Hiram error. Manning would later come around to score the game's first run on an RBI groundout struck by
Max Warren. Nahra later scored on a single hit by leadoff man
Matt Contreras.
In the sixth, the Lords drew two more walks. Runners advanced on a wild pitch and Manning hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored pinch runner
Chris Stevens.
Kenyon (16-5, 4-0 NCAC East) had just five hits in game one, but erupted for 16 hits in game two, which was called in the sixth inning due to rain.
The Lords wasted no time in pummeling Hiram pitching. Two walks and a single by
Jackson Celestin loaded the bases. Junior
Phillip Nam then belted a one-out grand slam to left center. RBI hits from
Mikey Arman, Nam and Manning followed in the second inning and Kenyon owned a quick 7-0 lead.
The Lords then tacked on one more run in the third and capped off a four-run fifth inning with a three-run homer from freshman
Jason Clebowicz.
Throughout the doubleheader, Nahra went 4-for-7 with a double, triple and three runs scored. Celestin and
Tyler Roldan played one game each, but came up with three hits apiece. Arman, Manning, Nam, Contreras and
Matt von Roemer all played both games and all had two hits on the day.
Nick Maryan was Kenyon's starting pitcher in game two, but he didn't get through the third inning and ended up giving way to
Connor Farrell, who finished things off without allowing hit. He walked just one and fanned three to pick up the win.
Sophomore Jesse Bogacz tossed a complete game three-hitter and fanned nine batters
in the first game of the Lords' doubleheader sweep of the Hiram College Terriers.
Kenyon won game one 3-0 and then cruised to a 12-2 victory in game two.
