Baseball finishes one, cancels two

GAMBIER, Ohio – After game two of Saturday's baseball doubleheader between Kenyon College and Allegheny College was postponed, the two teams were able to complete that game Sunday, resulting in a 17-4 win for Allegheny. However, the doubleheader that was followed was cancelled because of thunderstorms.

Kenyon's defense faltered in Allegheny's game-two victory that spanned two days. The Lords committed six errors in the field and the miscues turned into eight unearned runs for the opposition. Allegheny totaled 17 hits, capped off by a grand slam off the bat of senior third baseman Joe Killian in the top of the eighth inning. The game was then called after eight innings due to a pre-determined coaches' agreement on a '10-run rule' that was put into effect in attempt to work more quickly through the logjam of conference contests.

Phillip Nam led the way for Kenyon offensively with a 3-for-4 effort including two RBIs. Nam's run-scoring single in the seventh inning extended the game for an additional inning.

Freshman Wyatt Sibiga (4-3) earned the win for the Gators behind six innings of work, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) prior to Saturday's postponement. Senior Sam Gillespie (6-4) was charged with the loss as he allowed eight hits and nine runs in five innings pitched. Only one of the nine runs charged to Gillespie was an earned run.

When that game was complete, the two teams began game one of Sunday's scheduled doubleheader, but in the top of the first inning the teams had to wait out a rain delay of about an hour in duration.

The two teams got back at it, but the game was called in the middle of the fourth inning due to rain and lightning. Allegheny had collected a 1-0 lead, but the game was not official and no statistics will count.

Up next for the Lords is the North Coast Athletic Conference Crossover Series, in which Kenyon will travel to either Denison University or Ohio Wesleyan University for a three-game series and a chance to advance to the NCAC tournament in Chillicothe, Ohio. Kenyon will be the third seed in the NCAC East division based on its 6-8 conference record. The Lords' opponent will be determined at the conclusion of Denison's doubleheader with Wabash College on Tuesday evening.
