LEXINGTON, Va. – The Kenyon College field hockey team found itself in a 2-0 hole in the second half of Sunday's non-conference contest at Washington & Lee University. Junior
Katelyn Hutchinson halved that deficit for the Ladies, but the host Generals matched that goal and forged ahead for a 3-1 victory.
The result left both teams with records of 2-2.
Washington and Lee registered the only goal of the first half at the 26:14 mark. It was scored by Haley Tucker and it developed off a penalty corner. Noelani Schulmeyer was credited with the assist after Tucker uncorked her shot from the top of the circle.
In the second half, it was more of the same from the Generals, who ended up out-shooting Kenyon, 25-13. From another penalty corner, Allie DiPietro launched her shot at a sharp angle. It traveled across the goal mouth and right to Annalise Thole, who deflected it past Kenyon keeper
Sarah Speroff and into the Ladies' cage.
About 16 minutes later, Kenyon cleared its zero off the scoreboard. Sophomore
Lynne Cullen had control deep in the Washington and Lee zone. She dropped a pass back for Hutchinson, who then fired it home. It was Hutchinson's third goal of the season. All three occurred in the Ladies' last two games.
Speroff was tested often in the Kenyon cage and she responded by making 17 saves, four more than her combined total from the Ladies' previous three games.
At the other end of the field, Ariyel Yavalar made five saves for Washington and Lee.
Kenyon returns home and back to North Coast Athletic Conference action on Tuesday, when it hosts Oberlin College at 4:30 p.m.
Junior Katelyn Hutchinson scored Kenyon's lone goal in Sunday's 3-1 loss at Washington and Lee University.
