Ladies sweep on opening night of Invitational

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College (8-3) volleyball team continued their good play to start the season with a pair of wins over Earlham College and Albion College on Friday night. The matches were a part of the team's Invitational played inside the Kenyon Athletic Center.

MATCH ONE

Kenyon cruised in three sets over the Quakers as they held their opponent to just a .118 attack percentage.

Delaney Swanson led the Ladies with 10 kills while Schuyler Stupica chipped in with eight. Defensively, Ashley Martens recorded 10 digs and Jensen Shurbert tied for the match high with 23 assists. Additionally, freshman Mackenzie Bruzzio contributed four kills, four service aces and seven digs.

Set one was fairly close before a 4-0 run from the Quakers tied the game at 11 following a service error. Kenyon regained a four-point (18-14) lead a little later after an ace from Bruzzio. The rest of the way, Kenyon allowed Earlham to get within two points just once more.

In the second set, Ashleigh Burton's kill brought the count to 19-17 Ladies, but after that, Kenyon reeled off six-straight points with Maleah Miller serving to win 25-17.

Leading 4-3 in the third set, the Ladies went on the game-clinching run. Kenyon hit a 9-1 stretch with three kills from Swanson, two Bruzzio aces and a couple of Quaker errors en route to a 25-15 win.

MATCH TWO

The Ladies rolled through the first two sets, 25-9 and 25-15, before Albion pushed the home team in the final two games.

Swanson led Kenyon with 14 kills and 20 digs while Stupica and Bruzzio each recorded at least 10 kills. Additionally, four other players had at least 12 digs. Shurbert bettered her match-one total as she tallied a match-high 39 assists.

It was a 7-6 tally in the opening set before a 6-0 spark with Miller serving once again opened things up for Kenyon. After the Ladies went up 13-6, the hit another big run, this time a 7-0 spurt to suffocate the Britons. Three different Ladies recorded kills while Albion aided the team from Gambier with three additional errors.

Set two saw Kenyon go up 14-8 following a Britons error and later the Ladies went up their biggest margin of the set (23-14) after another error. An Alexi Donnelly ace closed set two.

Needing to win the third to avoid defeat, Albion was able to hold off Kenyon late to push the match to a fourth set. The Britons led by as many as six points (19-13) before the Ladies came back. Another Swanson kill brought the set to 22-21 and an error later had the count at 24-23, but Albion's Marie Pregenzer delivered a kill to get a game the visitor's way.

In the fourth and final set, Kenyon had a 7-4 advantage after a Pregenzer error but Albion hung around over the rest of the game. The Britons tied the match at 10 and later at 16 apiece before a 6-1 Ladies run helped them take ahold of the set. During that stretch, Albion committed three errors to help Kenyon. Swanson closed the set with her match-high 20th kill.

The Ladies will conclude the Invitational tomorrow with matches against Olivet College and Franklin College starting at 11 a.m.
