Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Stingy Saints shut down Ladies

GAMBIER, Ohio – A defensively strong Thomas More College team, ranked No. 7 nationally, stonewalled the Kenyon College women's soccer team Friday evening at Mavec Field. The visiting Saints allowed just two Kenyon shots and left town with a 3-0 non-conference victory.

The win kept the Saints unbeaten and pumped their overall record to 5-0-1. The tie came against John Carroll University, which is the next team up for Kenyon. The loss dropped the host Ladies to 2-3-1. They'll travel to John Carroll on Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest.

Thomas More netted the only goal it would need about 20 minutes into the contest. A through ball up the middle of the field was deflected several times before it bounced to the feet of Olivia Neinaber. The Saints' freshman collected it, raced past the last Kenyon defender, slid to her right and then fired a shot to the left side of the goal, beating Kenyon starting goalkeeper Maria Paparella.

Paparella wound up making four saves in the first half and then was replaced by Jillian Countey, who played the entire second half and made three saves.

Thomas More tacked on two second-half goals to seal the deal. Josie Perrino netted the first of those two and Neinaber booted in her second of the game to cap the scoring.

Kenyon was limited to just two shots and neither was threatening. The Ladies' best chance to score came late in the game, when Maggie Smith got past the defense and had a one-on-one with the Saints keeper. Before she could decide where to put the ball, she was whistled for being offside.

Thomas More ended up out-shooting the Kenyon 17-2 and had a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
