BEXLEY, Ohio – Wednesday night did not go as planned for the Kenyon College Ladies, as they found themselves playing catch-up for most of their women's soccer match with the host Capital University Crusaders. The Crusaders scored within the game's first four minutes and did not look back, defeating the Ladies 3-0.
Capital was able to dictate the pace of the game immediately following the opening whistle and earned a corner kick. The Crusaders bunched in the box and when the kick came to the far post, Capital's Monique Hanayik was there to direct it over the Kenyon goal line.
The Crusaders (2-4-0) would add on to their lead later in the half after a turnover in Kenyon's defensive territory. When the ball was recovered by Capital, it was dribbled down the sideline and crossed into the box where it was volleyed into the back of net on a kick from Caroline Hester that curled past Kenyon goalkeeper
Jillian Countey inside of the near post.
In the second half, the Crusaders scored in the 86th minute off a rebound. Countney made an initial save, but was caught out of position when Capital's Amanda Kachaylo charged at the loose ball and scored, pushing the Crusaders to their final 3-0 margin.
It was an active night in net for Countey as she faced 19 shots and recorded seven saves.
The Ladies were not able to get many opportunities on offense. Their top three chances came on a run from
Meredith Rogers, a shot off a set piece from
Emma Klug and a shot from
Abby Kauff that went wide of the net in the 76th minute.
The Ladies (2-5-1) will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. They'll match up with the host Tigers at 5 p.m. in what will be the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Freshman goalkeeper Jillian Countey made seven saves during
the Ladies 3-0 loss at Capital University on Wednesday night.
