GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon Ladies (12-5, 2-1 NCAC) volleyball team earned their first 3-0 victory against Ohio Wesleyan University since October 4, 2011 on Wednesday night in a North Coast Athletic Conference match inside Tomsich Arena. Wednesday night's win may have been Kenyon's best of the year as OWU had been receiving votes in the latest AVCA Division III poll.
Delaney Swanson and
Schuyler Stupica helped lead Kenyon as they totaled 26 kills. For Stupica, she was virtually unstoppable in the middle as she hit a sizzling .526.
Alexi Donnelly added nine kills and 10 digs while setter
Jensen Shurbert dished out a match-high 41 assists.
The opening set was fairly close early as both teams had leads.
After a kill by Shelby Ksiazek that tied the set at 11, the Ladies retook the lead and never lost it during the next two possessions. Stupica registered a kill and that was followed up with an attack error from OWU. The Battling Bishops pulled to within one point on a pair of occasions before a 5-1 run pushed Kenyon ahead 19-14. They eventually won 25-20.
Set two saw neither team hold a lead bigger than three points until Kenyon edged OW U late. Following a Swanson error, the Ladies got three straight points to take a 22-18 advantage. The Battling Bishops later tied the set at 23 on a block assist from Shannon Schlater and Krysta Iwanek. However, that defensive momentum didn't carry over for the visitors as the Ladies got a huge swing and kill from Swanson and watched as an error by OWU gave the Ladies a 25-23 win.
In the third, the Ladies got out to a 12-7 lead after another error from the Battling Bishops. In fact, errors turned out to be a deciding factor in the end. With Kenyon holding a 20-17 advantage, OWU committed three straight bad sets pushing the home team to its biggest lead of the night (23-17). They later won 25-18.
The Ladies will next welcome Hiram College on October 1 for a 1 p.m. match.
