WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster got on a hot streak early in the first half and never looked back as they defeated the Kenyon College men's basketball team 101-46 Wednesday night in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Timken Gymnasium.
Wooster's offense was potent throughout the night as they hit 55.6 percent (35-of-63) from the field and 12-of-25 (48%) from three-point land. Dan Fanelli led the Fighting Scots with a game-high 18 points to go along with four assists and a pair of steals.
Leading the way for the Lords (4-12, 3-6 NCAC) was
Alex Laub who scored a team-high eight points and tied for the game-high with seven boards. First-year player
Carter Powell added seven points and six rebounds while
Matt Shifrin and
Bennett Grigull each tallied six points.
Early in the first half the Lords and Fighting Scots went back and forth trading the lead a few times. At the 15:30 mark, Grigull's layup pushed Kenyon ahead 8-7. That was the last lead for Kenyon.
Over the rest of the half, the Fighting Scots were virtually unstoppable on the offensive end. They hit 18 of the 23 shots (78.2%) they took including sinking eight from three-point range. On the other side, Kenyon struggled as they turned the ball over as many times (7) as they made shots (7).
By the end of the first 20 minutes, Wooster had attained a 63-29 advantage.
Wooster (10-6, 7-2 NCAC) continued to extend its lead into the second half as they outscored Kenyon 38-17. By game's end, the home team had held the Lords to a season-low 26.6 percent shooting including a 2-for-19 (10.5%) clip from long range.
The schedule doesn't get any easier for Kenyon who will next host NCAC-leading Denison University on January 21 at 3 p.m. The Big Red are 15-1 overall and 9-0 in conference play.
