MEADVILLE, Pa. – Ladies basketball coach
Suzanne Helfant earned her 350th career victory at Kenyon on Saturday as nine players scored at least five points in 71-39 win against Allegheny College. The Ladies swept the season series with the victory beating the Gators by 78 combined points in their two meetings.
The Ladies (14-5, 8-2 NCAC) wasted no time jumping out to an early lead in the first frame. After Allegheny scored their first basket to trim Kenyon's lead to 5-2, the Ladies responded with a 16-0 run over the game's next 5:01. Six different Ladies scored during that strech which was capped off by a
Sharon Hull three-ball with 2:42 left in the quarter.
It was more of the same in the second quarter, as the Ladies extended their lead with another 10-0 run in the middle of the quarter. The advantage grew to 40-17 at halftime.
Kenyon held the home team to just 21.4 percent shooting (3-of-14) in the first half.
Allegheny played the game much tighter in the second half, but the deficit was too much to overcome. The visitors saw their lead expand to as many as 27 points (52-25) in the third and as many as 36 points (70-34) in the fourth after an
Alexi Donnelly jumper with 1:40 left.
Bailey Dominguez led the way with 14 points while junior
Ifeoma Archimalo came off the bench as scored eight and tied for the game-high with eight rebounds. Additionally,
Griffin Tullis,
Lane Davis and
Miranda Diesz each contributed seven points. Rounding out the balanced performance included a half-dozen points from
Jessica Gerber and
Paige Matijasich and five each from
Sidney Cera and Hull.
The Ladies assisted on 20 of their 29 made shots.
The rebounding margin was overwhelmingly in the favor of Kenyon by a mark of 48-30, including 17 offensive rebounds for the Ladies. The Gators shot just 30.8 percent (16-for-52) from the field and 21.4 percent (3-for-14) from three-point range.
Kenyon also converted 24 Allegheny turnovers into 26 points.
Up next, the Ladies host Denison University on Wednesday night at Tomsich Arena. The Ladies have an inside track to a top-two seed in the NCAC, but a loss to the Big Red would push them back into a tie with their rivals. Denison won the first matchup earlier this season. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
The Ladies' 71-39 victory over Allegheny on Saturday marked head coach Suzanne Helfant's 350th career win at Kenyon.
