Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers hold off Lords, 73-64

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – An efficient offensive performance, including a 58-percent clip from three-point range, aided the DePauw University Tigers to a 73-64 win over Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon in a North Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball game.

With the win, DePauw improved to 8-5 and 3-2 in NCAC play while the Lords fell to 2-11 and 1-5 in conference competition.

In the game, the Tigers hit 41.7 percent from the field and also converted 25-of-34 (73.5%) from the free throw line. On the other side, the Lords converted 37 percent and just 6-of-22 (27.3%) from long distance. At the foul line Kenyon was 6-of-9.

After each team opened the affair missing a few shots, the Lords got a couple of baskets from Alex Laub and Bennett Grigull to take a 5-0 lead. Later, Carter Powell scored a layup at the 13:53 mark pushing the visitor's advantage to 11-7.

The four-point deficit was overcome though over the next 6:27 by DePauw. A 19-5 run was ended when David Vogel hit a three-pointer which put the Tigers up double digits, 26-16. During that stretch, the Tigers were 6-of-7 from the field while the Lords were 2-of-11.

Kenyon did rally to cut the deficit to four points on a pair of occasions with the last at 1:40 when Powell hit a jumper bringing the count to 39-35. By the end of the half, DePauw held a 41-35 advantage.

In the second half, the Lords put some pressure on the Tigers as they tried to get back into the game.

About two minutes into the second stanza, Grigull drained a three-pointer on an assist from Matt Shifrin which brought the score to 43-40. Later, trailing 63-51, Kenyon hit a 10-2 run with Shifrin scoring eight of those points and got the tally to 65-61 with 2:36 left.

But that was the closest the Lords got the rest of the way as DePauw scored six of its last eight points at the foul line. In those final moments, Kenyon found just one field goal make in a half-dozen attempts.

The Lords will look to break their seven-game losing streak on January 11 when they host Oberlin College at 8 p.m.
