GREENCASTLE, Ind. – DePauw University outscored Kenyon College 42-26 in the second half and ran its win streak to 11 games on Saturday afternoon in a 68-55 victory at Neal Fieldhouse in a North Coast Athletic Conference women's basketball contest.
The victory improved the Tigers to 14-1 and a perfect 6-0 in conference play while the Ladies dropped to 9-5 and 4-2 in NCAC action.
Despite shooting 36.4 percent from the field, the Tigers were aided with plenty of opportunities at the free throw line. Officials called 18 more fouls (28-10) against Kenyon and DePauw made them count as they hit 25-of-35 (71%). On the flip side, the Ladies attempted just eight.
During the first and second quarters, competition was extremely close with neither team holding a lead bigger than four points.
Ifeoma Archimalo, who tallied 11 points off the bench, gave Kenyon its biggest lead (14-10) with 1:15 left in the opening quarter on a layup from
Sharon Hull.
During the second, DePauw had a pair of one-point advantages with its last coming as the 2:51 mark after two free throws from Sydney Kopp. That brought the score to 25-24. But Kenyon retook the lead just a bit later as
Jessica Gerber drained a three-ball. By halftime, the Ladies had a 29-26 lead.
In the third, the scored changed in a favor of both teams a couple of times before Kenyon found its biggest lead. A Gerber jumper put the visitors up 36-31 with 7:31 left and a little over a minute later, Hull hit a corner jumper on an assist from
Charlotte Bussema to put Kenyon up five again, 38-33.
After that bucket though, DePauw began to get in gear. A 14-3 run sparked by Maya Howard who tallied eight points during that stretch helped the 19th-ranked team take a lead it never surrendered. With 2:47 left in the third, the Tigers had a 47-41 lead.
The Ladies got the game to within two points on a pair of occasions in the fourth quarter. An and-one was converted by Archimalo to start the quarter (52-50) and two possessions later
Paige Matijasich scored in the paint to bring the tally to 54-52. But DePauw followed with a 13-0 run capped off by two free throws from Claire Ryan to put the game out of reach.
Kenyon missed all seven of its shots during the span which lasted nearly six and a half minutes.
Next up for the Ladies is trip to Cleveland on January 9 to face John Carroll University at 3 p.m.
Sophomore Jessica Gerber scored 11 points for the Ladies in Saturday's 68-55 loss at No. 19 DePauw. Kenyon
will try and rebound this coming Monday when they travel to face John Carroll University.
