Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Win at Wooster puts Kenyon atop NCAC

WOOSTER, Ohio – Playing Tuesday afternoon on a soggy surface at The College of Wooster, the Kenyon College women's soccer team snapped out of its brief scoring drought and logged a 2-0 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) win over the host Fighting Scots.

The break-out pushed Kenyon's overall record to 4-6-2 and vaulted the Ladies to the top of the NCAC standings with seven points and a 2-0-1 mark. While most conference teams have played only three or four NCAC games so far this season, Kenyon remains the only unbeaten.

Nearly as important as the victory were the pair of goals for the Ladies' offense, which was held scoreless in its previous three contests. At the same time, the Ladies defense has been spectacular, yielding only two goals in the team's last seven games.

Kenyon goalkeeper Jillian Countey, a sophomore, had to make just four saves against Wooster to ring up her sixth shutout of the season. She now leads all conference keepers with a remarkable 0.38 goals against average. Prior to Tuesday's result, Countey's 0.43 goals against average ranked 21st among all NCAA Division III goalkeepers. She also ranked 12th in NCAA DIII with a .905 saves percentage, a mark that improved to .913 following the Wooster win.

While the defense continued to be rock solid, a revitalize Kenyon offense dominated the second half against the Scots. Wooster posted an 8-5 shot advantage in the first half, but Kenyon countered with a 16-3 difference in the second.

At 55:20, the Ladies finally broke through. Following a corner kick, freshman Caroline McNeer settled the ball down inside the right corner of the box. She took aim and fired her shot from there. It got past Wooster goalkeeper Maddy Ireton, hit the left corner of the crossbar and went in. That goal, which held up as the game-winner, was McNeer's first as a Kenyon Lady.

Less than two minutes later, the Ladies struck again. Wooster tried to clear the ball from its own zone, but it was intercepted by senior Campbell Fee. She then launched a shot from about 25 yards out and placed it into the middle of the goal, just under the crossbar and over the top of Ireton. That goal was Fee's third of the season.

Kenyon had plenty more opportunities, but Ireton wound up making seven saves, many at point-blank range, to keep her team close.

The Ladies have five more conference contests left and the next one will be Saturday evening at Hiram College, a team that is 3-7-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the NCAC.
