Ladies make Terriers pay for mistake

HIRAM, Ohio – The Hiram College Terriers made a crucial mistake in the second half of Saturday's women's soccer game with the visiting Kenyon College Ladies, who pounced on the mishap and turned it into a 1-0 North Coast Athletic Conference win.

In the game's 65th minute, a Kenyon crossing pass from the left side seemed to sail harmlessly into the Hiram box and across the goal mouth. When it landed, the Hiram goalkeeper and a Hiram defender couldn't decide who was going to play it. They ended up bouncing the ball between each other with neither taking control. That's when Kenyon sophomore Fallon Raviol stepped in, took over and booted the ball into the net for her first goal of the season.

That one goal and some solid defense was all it took for the Ladies, who improved to 5-6-2 overall and maintained first place in the NCAC with a 3-0-1 mark. On the other side of the field, the Terriers slid to 3-10-1 overall and 1-4-0 in the NCAC.

The Ladies outshot the Terriers 13-4 and 11 of their shots were on goal. Hiram goalkeeper Ally Green chalked up 10 saves to keep it a one-goal game. Kenyon goalkeeper, sophomore Jillian Countey, had to make just three saves to ring up her seventh shutout of the season. Following those 90 minutes of play against Hiram, Countey has a 0.35 goals against average. That mark is on pace to top the Kenyon single-season record of 0.56 set by Alissa Poolpol just two seasons ago.

The result of this game was the fifth 1-0 game the Ladies played this season. They were 1-3 in their previous four 1-0 contests.

Surging at the right time of year, the Kenyon women are 4-2-1 in their last six games and they'll next take on Ohio Wesleyan University in a road contest at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
