Lords inch closer to NCAC regular season title

GAMBIER, Ohio – A Bret Lowry goal and another solid defensive effort helped the Kenyon Lords soccer team earn a 1-0 Senior Day win against DePauw University on Saturday at Mavec Field in a North Coast Athletic Conference match. Prior to the match, Woo Jeon, Henry Myers, Morgan Miller, Billy O'Neill and Oliver Wynn were honored for their efforts in a Kenyon uniform.

Kenyon won for the eighth straight time and pushed its overall mark to 12-2-2. In NCAC play, the Lords moved to 7-0 and clinched at least a conference tourney semifinal home game on November 1. Should the Lords beat or tie Oberlin College on October 25, they'll win the outright regular-season crown for the third straight season.

Against the Tigers on Saturday, the Lords once again found good looks throughout the match and outshot DePauw 24-6.

It didn't take long for Kenyon to strike as it scored at 5:34. With Jeon along the right sideline, his throw-in near the right post was headed by Lowry over the outstretched arms of DePauw keeper Austin Bodner. It was Lowry's first goal of the season.

Three minutes later, the Lords nearly doubled up their margin. Wynn headed the ball in front of the net but it was saved at the goal line by a Tigers defender. DePauw came up with another defensive save later in the half while Bodner collected three saves.

By the end of the first 45 minutes, Kenyon held a 12-1 shots advantage.

In the second half, the Lords had several opportunities to score and increase their lead. Brice Koval had two shots in the 62nd minute but one was saved and another went wide. Gave Ivins added an on-goal attempt as well in the 70th minute but that was rejected by Bodner.

For the Tigers, there was only one real scoring chance which came late in the match. A cross came to Nick Carlson in the 85th minute, but his header went above the top crossbar.

Ian McInturf picked up his seventh shutout of the season needing to notch just one save.

The Lords' next match against Oberlin will start at 3:30 at Mavec this coming October 25.
