GAMBIER, Ohio – The nation's No. 1-ranked team Wittenberg University won in four sets on Wednesday night over Kenyon College in a North Coast Athletic Conference match at Tomsich Arena. For the Ladies, it was the first time they won a set against the Tigers since 2000, a span of 20 matchups.
Wittenberg remained undefeated at 19-0 while Kenyon closed its regular season with a 14-10 record. The Ladies will now wait and see who they'll play in the NCAC Tournament's first round next Friday, November 3 in Springfield, Ohio. Regardless of next week's outcome, the Kenyon program will have notched its third straight winning season. That's the most since there were a half-dozen from 1985-1990.
The Ladies got out to a good start, leading 10-7 as
Mackenzie Bruzzio and
Delaney Swanson each registered two kills. That forced a Wittenberg timeout and after the quick break, the Tigers came out on fire. Four different players registered a kill and the Ladies committed four errors of their own as Wittenberg hit a 10-0 run to take a 17-10 lead. The visitors allowed just two more points to the Ladies after that and won 25-12.
In the second, Kenyon was hanging tough again early in the set. Bruzzio tacked on a kill to bring the count to 9-7, and later, three points in a row from the Ladies had the count at 13-11. But like the first set, Wittenberg hit another run to pull away. Fischer and setter Karen Wildemann each tallied multiple kills as the Tigers won 25-15.
Kenyon then broke through in the third. It was 4-0 Ladies after an attack error by the Tigers forcing another timeout. Wittenberg found some traction after that and knotted things up at 8 following a Kenyon error. Both teams traded points for a bit afterwards before the Ladies found a big run of their own. Down 13-11, the Ladies hit an 8-0 stretch which included three aces and a kill from
Jensen Shurbert. The Ladies maintained that lead the rest of the way and won 25-23.
Wittenberg regrouped to close the match in the fourth. A 12-3 start to the set along with a .424 attack percentage helped the No. 1 team earn a 25-13 win. The Tigers also thwarted any Ladies attempt at another set victory as they held Kenyon to a .000 attack mark.
Senior Jensen Shurbert tallied seven kills, 20 assists,10 digs and three service aces as the Ladies fought hard
in a four-set loss to top-ranked Wittenberg. Kenyon will now wait and see who it will play in the NCAC tourney next weekend.
