Ladies finish off Fighting Scots, 4-1

WOOSTER, Ohio – With Saturday's big game looming, the Kenyon College field hockey team could have easily looked past The College of Wooster in Thursday's conference contest. Instead, the Ladies remained focused, put together a strong offensive showing and handed the host Fighting Scots a 4-1 defeat.

The victory pushed Kenyon's overall record to 15-2 and its North Coast Athletic Conference record to 12-1. It also sets up a Saturday showdown at Denison University with the conference championship on the line. The first-place Ladies will try to hold off the second-place Big Red (14-3, 11-2 NCAC), a team that dealt Kenyon its lone conference loss this season.

The Ladies posted a 20-12 shot advantage Thursday and scored a pair of goals in each half against the Scots (8-10, 5-8 NCAC). Senior Katelyn Hutchinson registered the team's first and third goals to run her team-best total to 13 goals on the season. Freshman Gigi Guenther knocked in the Ladies' second goal and senior Shannon Hart fired in the fourth.

Hutchinson's first goal came just 7:28 into the game. Her classmate, Weezie Foster was credited with the assist after sending the ball toward the cage. Hutchinson collected it there, dribbled around the Wooster goalkeeper and launched it over the line. Her second goal of the game occurred just one minute into the second half. She was able to corral a loose ball and lifted her shot into the upper half the Fighting Scots' cage.

In between Hutchinson's goals, the freshman combo of Guenther and Molly Keen accounted for another Kenyon tally. At the 31:03 mark of the first half, Keen found room through the left side of the Wooster circle. She dribbled toward the left post and then backhanded a pass across the goalmouth. Guenther was in position at the right post and directed the ball over the line.

Keen set up the Ladies' fourth and final goal, too. About 20 minutes into the second half, she initiated a penalty corner by steering a pass to Hart.  The pass went to the top of the circle, where Hart wound up and smacked it home for her sixth goal of the season.

At the other end of the field, senior goalkeeper Sarah Speroff and the defense fought off a dozen Wooster penalty corners. Speroff made seven saves and allowed just the one first-half goal, which was shot from outside the circle and tipped in by Sydney Schuster.

Kenyon has now won 11 of its last 12 games and six straight since losing to Denison on October 3.
