GRANVILLE, Ohio – Offensive chances were few for the Kenyon College field hockey team on Saturday morning as the Denison University Big Red notched a slim 1-0 win in North Coast Athletic Conference action at Piper Field. The victory secured the No. 1 seed for Denison (15-3, 12-2 NCAC) in next week's conference tourney while Kenyon earned the No. 2 seed.
The Ladies (15-3, 12-2 NCAC) were able to get just two on-goal looks in the contest as Denison's solid defense kept Kenyon's offense in check for the majority of the match.
Just 2:26 into the affair, senior
Zoe Chrissos nearly put the Ladies in front. Her shot from the left side of the circle just went wide. That shot turned out to be the only attempt for Kenyon in the first half.
On the other side, Denison put a lot of pressure on Kenyon's cage. The Big Red attempted six penalty corners – as compared to none for the Ladies – and found a few shots on cage.
Four of the home team's shots came on goal but the Ladies' defense was outstanding.
Sarah Speroff notched three saves while
Molly Keen tallied a defensive save.
By the end of the half, there was no score.
In the second stanza, the Ladies picked up their movement within the first five minutes and found two shots from senior
Weezie Foster. Both of her attempts, though, were stopped by Big Red keeper Kerry Lawler.
The scoreless tie was then broken by Denison at the 44th minute. Lucy Pearsall was left of the cage and she crossed a pass to Ali Gakenheimer who finished along the right side.
Kenyon had two more shots after that, but both attempts from Foster and
Shannon Hart were blocked.
Despite the loss, the Ladies will still have a chance to defend their NCAC Tournament title from a year ago. On November 1, they'll host Wittenberg University at 2:30 p.m. at McBride Field.
Sarah Speroff tallied five saves but the Ladies ended up on the short end of the stick as Denison claimed a 1-0 win
in both team's regular-season finales. Kenyon will now host Wittenberg on Nov. 1 in an NCAC tourney semifinal match.
