OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson University Mustangs trotted out 25 different players Friday night in a non-conference contest against the visiting Kenyon College women's soccer team. The rotation of fresh legs seemed to do the trick for Stevenson, which claimed a 1-0 victory over the Ladies.
The result was a little hard to swallow for Kenyon, which out-shot Stevenson 18-5. The Mustangs had just three shots in the first half and two more in the second.
It was the Mustangs' second shot of the game, which came at the 34:40 mark, that was the only one that mattered. Following a corner kick sent in by Alex Hamel, an initial attempt at scoring flew across the box. Kellen Wittman recovered the ball and served it back into the six-yard box for Shannon McNulty, who headed it into the Ladies' goal.
Prior to that shot, Kenyon had quite a few scoring opportunities. Two early corners resulted in misfires from
Kiele Anderson and
Caroline McNeer.
Campbell Fee and Fallon Raviol both had multiple shots, as well, but they couldn't find the mark, either.
The second half was more of the same, as the Kenyon women peppered the Stevenson defense with shots. None of them, however, were on target. The Ladies took four shots within the first 20 minutes of the second half and all sailed wide or high.
Six of the Ladies' 18 shots were on goal and Stevenson goalkeeper Tiffany McKee saved them all. She made two saves in the first half and four more in the second to help the Mustangs improve their record to 8-3-0.
The loss for Kenyon, now scoreless in its last three games, dropped the Ladies' overall record to 3-6-2. It also marked the end of Kenyon's non-conference scheduled. The rest of the Ladies' games, beginning Tuesday at The College of Wooster, are North Coast Athletic Conference contests.
Caroline McNeer and the rest of the Ladies soccer team took 18 shots Friday night,
but they couldn't find the net during a 1-0 loss at Stevenson University.
