GRANVILLE, Ohio – For nearly three quarters, the Kenyon College Ladies gave the nationally-ranked Trine University Thunder all they could handle in Saturday's women's basketball game at Denison University. The Ladies ran out of gas in the fourth quarter, however, and fell by a 52-42 final.
Kenyon (1-1) trailed 13-12 after one quarter and then tied things up 25-25 at the half. Upon returning to the floor to open third-quarter play, the Ladies blitzed Trine with an 8-3 run that resulted in a 33-28 lead. During the run, the Ladies worked the ball down low. Juniors
Sharon Hull and
Lane Davis each connected on a pair of jumpers in the paint.
Trine (2-0), a team that went 25-3 last season and currently owns top-20 rankings in national polls, continued to trail by five points for the next couple of minutes. Then, at the 5:21 mark of the third quarter, Cassidy Williams buried a three-pointer. That sparked a 14-3 run that saw the Thunder end the quarter with a 44-38 advantage. Williams had five points during the Trine run and finished with a team-high 12 points for the game.
Both teams struggled to find points in the closing quarter. Kenyon went 1-for-10 from the field and 2-for-2 at the line to log just four points. Trine was 1-for-11 in the fourth, but managed to make all six of its free throw attempts to close out the game.
Hull and Davis combined to produce a third of the Kenyon offense. Hull was 8-for-12, including 2-for-4 from long range, for a game-high 18 points. That output was also her single-game career-best, surpassing her previous best of 13 points, which she reached twice during her freshman season. Davis didn't quite shoot as well (4-of-11), but still managed ten points.
No other Kenyon player scored more than four points, but senior
Jessica Gerber contributed five assists and led the team with seven rebounds. Sophomore
Paige Matijasich added six more rebounds and helped the Ladies produce a slim 35-31 edge on the boards.
As a team, the Ladies shot 37.8 percent (17-of-45) for the game, while holding Trine to a 28.6 percent (14-of-49).
The Ladies will return to Denison on Sunday to face Earlham College in another non-conference, neutral-site game at 1 p.m. Tuesday, they'll return to campus for their home-opener against John Carroll University at 7 p.m.
