GAMBIER, Ohio – Wabash College (3-3, 2-1 NCAC) outscored Kenyon College 26-18 in the paint and was efficient from the three-point line (7-of-16) in a 70-57 victory at Tomsich Arena on Saturday afternoon in North Coast Athletic Conference action.
Jack Davidson, the NCAC's leading scorer, led the Little Giants with 16 points including an 11-for-12 showing at the free throw line. Harrison Hallstrom added 16 points and eight rebounds while Connor Rotterman and Alex Eberhard each scored in double figures. The Little Giants hit 43.8 percent from downtown while also connecting on 21-of-26 foul shots (80.8%).
On Kenyon's end,
Carter Powell scored a team-high 12 points and also notched four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Matt Shifrin added 11 points including a 3-for-3 performance from long range.
Ryan O'Neil and
Ben Stern added nine and seven points, respectively. As a team, the Lords shot a season-low 33.9 percent from the field and were outrebounded by Wabash 45-29.
A Colten Garland three-ball early in the first half helped Wabash get a quick 5-0 lead before Kenyon responded. The Lords scored on three of the next four possessions as Powell drained a three-pointer at 15:22 tying the game at 7-7.
Kenyon (4-3, 1-2 NCAC) followed up Powell's shot with makes from
Alex Laub and O'Neil pushing the score to 12-7. Wabash then countered to retake the lead as Davidson hit a three-pointer at 12:12 moving the score to 15-14, Little Giants.
Both teams traded the lead a couple times after that, but it was Wabash who would close the half strong. After Rotterman hit from long range at 9:59 moving the scoreboard to 19-18 Wabash, the visitors went on a 21-10 run. The Little Giants went up as many as 16 points (39-23) on another trey from Rotterman. The Lords were able to bring the score to 40-28 as
Andrew Becil scored at the buzzer on a three-pointer from along the right wing.
That double-digit lead remained for much of the second half before a few Wabash turnovers were converted into points by the Lords.
With less than five minutes left, Wabash coughed it up four straight times and watched as Powell scored three buckets including a dunk.
Kiki Boyle added a transition three-ball bringing the score to 61-53. With 1:17 left, Shifrin scored two free throws pulling the game to six points, 63-57. However, that would be the last scoring for Kenyon.
Next on the schedule for the Lords is a home date on December 16 at 3 p.m. against Ohio Wesleyan University.
