GAMBIER, Ohio – Wittenberg University outscored Kenyon College 38-16 in the paint and by night's end earned a 66-54 win in a North Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball game at Tomsich Arena on Wednesday.
The visitors also hit 17-of-22 from the foul line in the second half aiding to their win as well.
Bennett Grigull led Kenyon with 13 points while hitting 3-of-5 from deep.
Alexander Powell added 11 points and four rebounds and
Alex Laub contributed 10 points and seven boards. Rounding out Kenyon's best efforts was
Ethan Shapiro's six points, nine rebounds and two blocks.
Shapiro got the Lords going as he had a hand on the team's first six points. The senior got a pair of free throws and a put-back shot before assisting Laub at 16:51 giving Kenyon a 6-2 advantage.
A little more than three minutes later, Kenyon attained its biggest lead of 14-8 following a layup from
Matt Shifrin. Later,
Carter Powell found Shifrin for a free-throw line jumper pushing the Lords ahead by a half-dozen again (16-10) at 11:54.
Down by six for the second time, Wittenberg found some offensive efficiency. A fast-break layup from Shane Edwards and a jumper from the left elbow by Jaelin Williams tied the game at 16 with just less than nine minutes left.
The Lords retook the lead on the next possession as
Alexander Powell swished through a three-ball and they extended that to a four-point lead (22-18) a bit later.
But once again, Wittenberg found another 6-0 run to take its first lead. With 4:25 left, Connor Seipel scored pushing the visitors ahead 24-22. The lead never changed hands again as the Tigers took a 28-26 lead into the break.
Witt took that two-point lead into the second half and extended it as Landon Hormann scored underneath and also drilled a three-pointer pushing the visitors up 33-26.
Kenyon fought back to cut the deficit to one (33-32) as Laub hit back-to-back jumpers with the latter at 16:21. Despite the slim deficit, the Lords weren't able to get over that hump.
Over the next five minutes and change, the Tigers extended their advantage again. With 10 minutes left, a Chad Roy free throw put Witt up eight, its biggest margin at 42-34.
Kenyon cut Witt's lead to three points (44-41) on a Grigull three-ball and later got the deficit to four (48-44) on a
Carter Powell trey at 5:29, but they would get no closer.
The Lords next welcome Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday at 3 p.m. OWU is coming off an upset win against first-place Denison on Wednesday.
