Albion wins thriller in overtime against Kenyon

ALBION, Mich. – The Kenyon Lords (1-1) lacrosse team trailed by as many as six goals before forcing overtime and eventually falling to Albion College on Saturday night. The Britons prevailed 17-16 in a matchup played at Detroit Country Day High School.

Albion, which has made the last two NCAA tournaments, snapped a two-game losing streak in the series against Kenyon.

Early action saw the Britons attempt the first 11 shots and gain a 1-0 lead on a man-up goal from Harrison Palmer at 11:54.  But a few minutes later, Pierce Kraft knotted things up at 1-1 before Kenyon went up for the first time. With the scored tied at 2, Jonah Florence fired from a pass by freshman Ian Griffith and moved the visitors up 3-2.

In the second, Albion and Kenyon were tied 4-4 with 5:40 left before David DiRado chalked up back-to-back goals at 4:03 and 3:10. Down by a pair, the Lords got their fifth goal as Alex Lopez scored with about 2:30 minutes remaining.

A couple minutes into the third, Kenyon found itself down 7-6 after Josh Galardi scored on a man-up opportunity. After that goal, the Britons reeled off four-straight and got their biggest lead at the time of 11-6 on another Palmer goal.

Albion added a few more to its lead and had a 14-8 advantage with less than a minute to go in the third.

Despite a sizeable deficit, the Lords kept fighting.

After a couple of goals within 1:16 of each other from Griffith and Chris Ferraro, the Lords trailed 15-13 with about seven minutes left. Albion added one more goal a little over a minute later before Kenyon stunned the home team and tied it up.

A 3-0 run began on Griffith's second goal of the night with 4:20 left. Less than a minute later, Griffith struck again, this time on an assist from Sosa. Kenyon's final goal was delivered by Lopez. With less than 90 seconds left, Lopez scored unassisted and tied the game again at 16.

In overtime, Albion scored rather quickly to win the game. The Britons won the face-off and Brandon Lebioda picked up the ground ball and scored the game-winning goal.

Kenyon will try and bounce back on March 8 when Aurora University – a team that also made last year's NCAA Tournament – comes to Gambier for a 1 p.m. contest.
