MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Kenyon College softball team had no problems getting the bats going in Saturday's season-opening doubleheader at Rhodes College. It was the other aspects of the game that were a bit rocky for the Ladies, who fell to Rhodes, 13-7, and then were defeated by Webster University, 11-10.
The Ladies (0-2) pounded out 29 hits on the day, but also committed a total of nine errors that led to nine unearned runs throughout the doubleheader.
None of the runs, earned or not, stung more sharply than the one Webster scored in the bottom of the seventh to produce a walk-off win against the Ladies. With one out and runners on first and second, Webster runners advanced on a wild pitch. The next batter, Abby Burroughs, was credited with an infield single that plated the winning run, completing a string of seven runs for the Gorlocks over the last three innings of the game.
In that game against Webster, the second of the day for Kenyon, the Ladies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks, in part, to a two-run double from sophomore
Grace Pilz. Webster, however, used a Kenyon error to score three of its own runs in the bottom of the inning.
The Ladies went on to post three-run innings in the fifth and sixth, too. In the fifth,
Amanda Ogata and
Madi Maldonado had RBI hits. In the sixth, it was Pilz and
Nicole Horita with the run-scoring hits for the Ladies.
Webster (1-0) also cranked out a big inning. The Gorlocks capitalized on two Kenyon errors to put up a five-spot in the fifth. That gave Webster a 9-7 lead, just before Kenyon pulled back in front, 10-9, in the top of the sixth. Webster got a single run in the sixth to tie things up and then got the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh.
Pilz wound up with two hits and three RBI. Ogata finished with a team-best four hits for the Ladies, while Maldonado and
Lauren Graf each belted out three hits.
In game one against Rhodes (6-5), the Ladies struggled right out of the gate. Three errors, five hits, two walks and two hit batters all added up to an 8-0 lead for the Lynx. The five Rhodes hits were three singles, a double and home run from Kendall Henry.
Once the smoke cleared and the Ladies got their bearings, it was an even game for the final six innings. Kenyon got the bats going in the third inning with an Ogata single followed by a home run from
Britny Patterson. In the fourth, Pilz doubled to right centerfield and later scored on a single up the middle from
Keely Sweet. Next, in the fifth, the Ladies tacked on two more runs when Pilz stroked a double to right field to score Graf and
Allison Stratman.
At that point, the Ladies closed the gap to five runs, but that would be as close as they would get. Rhodes scored once in the bottom of the fifth and the Ladies added their final run in the top of the sixth when Coyle scored on a Lynx error.
Both teams had 11 hits in the game, but it was Kenyon's six errors that made the difference.
At the plate, Patterson and Pilz each had a pair of hits, while Graf led the way with three singles. Ogata scored twice and Pilz and Patterson each had two RBI.
Kenyon (0-2) will get a re-do tomorrow as it faces the same two teams. The Ladies will go up against Webster at 10 a.m. followed by a noon contest against host Rhodes.

Grace Pilz went a combined 4-for-8 with three doubles, five RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's season-opening doubleheader.
