PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team ended its three-game spring break trip on a positive note Friday by topping the Bridgewater State University Bears, 10-7, at Ross Park. The win was the first of the season for Kenyon, which improved to 1-2.
The Ladies got in front early and never looked back. A goal from sophomore
Cassie Hudson-Heck tied the game at 1-1 and ignited six-goal run. Hudson-Heck scored again during the run and senior
Allie McLane registered two goals and two assists as the Ladies took a five-goal lead with five minutes left in the half.
The teams traded goals over those final five minutes and Kenyon got to the break with a healthy 8-3 advantage.
Bridgewater State (2-2), a team that won its previous two games by a combined score of 39-13, wasn't going to fade away. The Bears outshot (13-5) and outscored (4-2) the Ladies in the second half, but the Kenyon defense held up for the win.
Junior goalkeeper
Allie Dumas made 12 saves to preserve the victory, while the Kenyon defense scooped up 17 groundballs and caused 13 Bridgewater State turnovers.
McLane finished with a game-high five points on three goals and two assists.
Kat Englert and Hudson-Heck each had two goals, while
Lucy Somers tallied a goal and an assist.
The Ladies return to Ohio and will next play at Otterbein University on Wednesday. That game precedes a string of five straight home games, which begins Saturday against John Carroll University.
