Ladies fend off Warriors’ second-half surge

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon Ladies felt a little pressure  from Hendrix College (4-4) after watching the Warriors score four times in a span of 39 seconds on Monday but in the end Kenyon earned a 17-11 victory at McBride Field.  With the win, the Ladies evened their record at 3-3 with three more home games on the schedule over the next 11 days.

Leading the way for Kenyon was Kat Englert who tallied five goals while Mary Grace Detmer and Allie McLane added three. Kenyon also saw Cassie Hudson-Heck and Sabrina Greene each chip in with two scores. In goal, Carina Barnes made just her second career start and notched five saves.

Over the first eight-plus minutes of action, Englert and Hudson-Heck each registered a pair of goals as the Ladies got out to a 4-0 advantage.

Hendrix responded at the 21:25 mark with its first goal as Morgan Dasch scored on an assist from Bridget Umble. But the Ladies came right back to go up 6-1 as Detmer and Englert found the back of the net with less than 10 minutes left in the half.

The Warriors added one more goal from Kaitlyn Smith, but that would be all their first-half scoring as Kenyon found three more scores with its last coming from Detmer after a Hendrix penalty.

In the second half, Kenyon tallied its tenth score a few minutes in as Englert scored her fifth goal of the contest pushing the lead to 10-2.

Despite the deficit, the undermanned Hendrix team – playing with just 13 players – began to find some offensive rhythm.

Down 15-6 after a man-up goal from McLane, the Warriors scored four straight times from the 5:34 mark to 4:55. Four different Warriors scored and that brought the tally to 15-10. Hendrix added one more goal from Umble, but that would be it as Kenyon scored twice more from Greene and Detmer.

Kenyon doubled up Hendrix in the shot department, 42 to 21, including a 31-16 advantage in on-goal attempts. The Ladies also were efficient posting a 16-of-19 clears mark while the Warriors went 11-of-26.

Next up for the Ladies is a home date in two days against Ohio Northern University at 4:30 p.m.
