GAMBIER, Ohio – Nine different players recorded a least one goal for the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team, which raced to a ten-goal lead Wednesday and then settled on a 17-10 victory over the visiting Ohio Northern University Polar Bears.
Kat Englert,
Lucy Somers and
Allie McLane notched the Ladies' first three goals, before Ohio Northern registered its first goal at the 23:53 mark. After that, the floodgates broke open for Kenyon. Over the next 11 minutes of play, the Ladies rattled off eight straight goals, including three more from McLane, to jump out to an 11-1 advantage.
Ohio Northern (1-5) scored the final four goals of the half, but trailed 11-5 at the break.
Kenyon then tallied four of the second half's first six goals, including two from
Cassie Hudson-Heck, to move ahead 15-7 with 15:47 left in the game. The Polar Bears returned fire with three more, but they never got closer than six goals the rest of the way.
McLane, a senior, led Kenyon (4-3) with four goals, while Englert, a junior, dialed up a team-high six points on three goals and three assists. Her three goals gave her a team-high 18 for the season, as well as 142 for her career. That mark moved her past
Jane Symmes and into sixth place on the Ladies' list of all-time top goal scorers.
Somers and Hudson-Heck, both sophomores, matched McLane's four-point output, but they did so with two goals and two assists apiece.
Abby Coleman,
Alexis Redford-Maung Maung,
Esme Cole and
Avery Morgan accounted for the other Kenyon goals.
The Ladies offense outshot Ohio Northern 39-20, while the Ladies defense forced 23 turnovers and held the Polar Bears to a clearing percentage of just over 50 percent. At the back end of the Kenyon defense, sophomore goalkeeper
Carina Barnes got the start and the win after playing roughly 43 minutes and making a pair of saves. Junior
Allie Dumas took over the rest of the way and made four saves.
The game was the third of five in row at home for the Ladies, who'll next host Capital University on March 29 at 5 p.m.
Senior Allie McLane rang up four quick goals Wednesday and set the tone for the
Ladies during a 17-10 non-conference victory over Ohio Northern University.
