WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Down 5-1 early in the second quarter, the Kenyon Lords lacrosse team began chipping away at Otterbein University's lead and eventually prevailed 12-11 on an
Emilio Sosa goal in the final quarter lifting Kenyon to its third win of the year.
The victory evened the Lords' record at 3-3 and sets up a home date with Ohio Wesleyan University this coming Saturday at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day for Kenyon as well.
Robert Jacobs and Sosa led all scorers with four goals apiece while
Jonah Florence got a pair. In goal,
Gabriel Avis collected 14 saves, including one with 11 seconds left that denied the Cardinals a tying score.
Less than a minute into the contest, freshman
Ian Griffith gave the Lords a 1-0 lead as he scored on an assist from
Alex Lopez. But following that, Otterbein cranked out five goals of its own to get in front.
The Cardinals got three of their goals in the first. Jake Grundey tied the game at the 9:15 mark and less than a minute later got another one off the stick of Justin McKee. Otterbein's final tally of the quarter came on an unassisted goal from Mike Brendle.
In the second, the home team added two more scores before the Lords got in gear. Jacobs got things going with a pair of scores from 9:54 to 8:15. He later added another goal which brought the tally to 5-4. By halftime, the Lords had gotten to within one (6-5) after a man-up goal from Sosa.
Third-quarter action saw the Lords retake the lead. Trailing 7-6,
Pierce Kraft notched a goal while Sosa added two more to put Kenyon up 9-7 with 6:56 left. In the fourth, Otterbein found itself up again, this time with 11:39 left and an 11-10 advantage. But the Lords, again, responded.
Lopez tied the game with 6:37 remaining. At one point following that goal, Otterbein had five attempts on Kenyon's net spanning about 90 seconds but none of them rang true. Then with 1:03 left, Sosa tipped in a shot from Florence and lifted the Lords to victory.
Sophomore Emilio Sosa scored a career-high four goals including the game-winner on Wednesday as the Lords
rallied back to defeat Otterbein University 12-11 at Memorial Stadium.
