GAMBIER, Ohio – Trailing by as many as six goals against Capital University early in the second half of Wednesday's women's lacrosse game, the Kenyon College Ladies fought all the way back to tie things up with a little more than four minutes left on the clock. The visiting Crusaders, however, scored the final goal of the contest and escaped Mavec Field with an 11-10 victory.
Kenyon (4-4) faced a 7-2 deficit at halftime thanks mainly to the play of Capital's duo of junior Kara Hines and senior Korri Titus. Together, they recorded five of the first seven Crusaders' goals. Meanwhile, the Kenyon offense was stymied by Maddie Wilson, Capital's goalkeeper who made five, first-half saves.
When the second half started, Titus scored again for Capital (6-1), but Kenyon responded in a big way. Freshman
Avery Morgan started a Ladies' run with a goal at the 27:42 mark. Over the next three minutes,
Maggie Grabowski and
Kat Englert tacked on two more to pull the Ladies within three at 8-5.
Titus pumped in yet another one in for Capital to temporarily halt the Kenyon run, but the Ladies bounced right back with back-to-back goals from senior
Allie McLane. Sophomore
Lucy Somers assisted on both of those McLane goals and the Ladies moved the score to 9-7 with a little less than 15 minutes to play.
Again, Titus stepped in to thwart the Kenyon rally and again the Ladies retaliated. This time, it was a three-goal outburst from the Kenyon women that knotted things up 10-10 with 4:38 left. Englert scored the first and third goals of that run, while
Cassie Hudson-Heck accounted for the other Kenyon tally.
Capital called a timeout, returned to the field and won the draw. With 3:03 on the clock, Hines broke through the Ladies defense and scored what would turn out to be the game-winner.
Kenyon had two opportunities to tie things up again, but a shot from Grabowski sailed wide right with about one minute left and a free position shot from
Avery Morgan was saved by Wilson with 38 seconds left.
Hines ended up with a game-high five goals, while Titus scored four for the Crusaders, winners of six straight. Kenyon got three goals from both McLane and Englert, while Somers had the high point total with four assists. Grabowski had two goals. Hudson-Heck and Morgan each had one.
Kenyon outshot Capital, 26-21. Wilson saved eight of those shots, while Kenyon keeper
Carina Barnes turned aside nine at the other end of the field.
Lucy Somers handed out four assists Wednesday and helped boost a Kenyon rally
that fell just short in an 11-10 defeat to the Capital University Crusaders.
