Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Late goal lifts Wooster over Kenyon

Despite holding a lead for all but two seconds in the second half on Saturday afternoon, victory eluded the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team, falling to the aptly named Fighting Scots of The College of Wooster by a final count of 14-13.

Wooster called a timeout with 21 seconds remaining in the tied game. After starting in their defensive zone behind their own cage, the Fighting Scots were able to push the ball the length of the field, setting up a Jenny Grossman free position shot attempt with just four seconds remaining. Grossman scored and gave her team the victory.

Back in the first half, the game was very even, with teams trading goals to stand tied at 4-4 with 13:09 remaining. From there, Kenyon would rattle off four unanswered goals in a span of 4:40 to take an 8-4 lead, their largest lead of the game.

Wooster was fighting back the rest of the way, but did manage to cut the deficit to 9-6 by the end of the first half.

After allowing six goals in the entire first half, Kenyon's defense struggled to slow down the Fighting Scots in the second. When Wooster scored, they did so in bunches, allowing them to comeback from as much as a four-goal deficit.

Kenyon's halftime edge quickly dissipated to a one-goal lead in the first 10 minutes of the second half. After a timeout, Kenyon responded with two goals separated by 12 seconds from Allie McLane and Cassie Hudson-Heck to build their lead back to 11-8.

The flurry of goal scoring continued, but shifted towards Wooster who tied the game with three goals scored in just 54 seconds. The game stood tied at 11-11 with 18:32 remaining.

Momentum swung once again, this time with the Kenyon defense standing their ground and the offense working to change the game to a slower tempo. The strategy worked, and Kenyon regained the lead and added an insurance goal to lead by two goals with 9:07 to play. Those two goals were scored by Hudson-Heck and Kat Englert.

The last run came from the Fighting Scots, who tied the game with two goals from Laura Papp before the game-winner from Grossman provided the final blow.

Individually, Englert scored six goals - five in the first half - and recorded two assists. Hudson-Heck added four goals while Maggie Grabowski, Lucy Somers, and McLane each pitched in with a goal apiece. Carina Barnes recorded nine saves in net in the loss.

Kenyon will try for its first conference win next in its first NCAC road game when they travel to Indiana to take on the DePauw University Tigers next Saturday.
