Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Ladies fall to Haverford in season opener

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Playing even with Haverford College for the first 20 minutes of Monday's season-opening game, the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team looked to be in good shape. Haverford, however, went on an 8-1 run to close out the first half and rolled to a 16-9 win over the Ladies.

Kenyon (0-1) got goals from Allie McLane, Cassie Hudson-Heck and Kat Englert to knot the score at 3-3 with 13:27 showing on the first-half clock. Haveford's Maeve Gaffney then scored at the 11:32 mark to spark the game-changing run for the Fords. During that run, Gaffney scored twice and Sarina Manetta scored three times.

Kenyon freshman Avery Morgan tallied her first collegiate goal to snap a seven-goal streak for Haverford, but the Fords responded with one more and went into the break with a comfortable 11-4 lead.

The Fords recorded the first goal of the second half and Kenyon came back with goals from McLane and Lucy Somers. Now trailing 12-6, Kenyon could get no closer. The Fords, who outshot the Ladies 27-20, scored four of the game's final seven goals to chalk up the victory.

Manetta ended up with a game-high four goals for the Fords, while Shannon Rafsol and Allie Gibbons each scored three times on Kenyon goalkeeper Allie Dumas, who played the entire game and made eight saves.

McLane and Hudson-Heck both had two goals and an assist for Kenyon, while Somers tacked on a goal and two assists.

Haverford (2-2) used a trio of goalkeepers. Starter Tatiana Lathion got the win by allowing just the four goals in the first half. She played 30 minutes and made four saves.

The Ladies remain in the Sunshine State for the week and will next take on St. John Fisher College in a 7:30 p.m. game Wednesday.
