No. 8 Fighting Scots sweep Lords

GAMBIER, Ohio – The College of Wooster (19-5, 8-2 NCAC) totaled 33 runs on 31 hits over two games on Saturday as they run ruled the Kenyon College Lords (13-14, 5-5 NCAC) in both games at McCloskey Field in North Coast Athletic Conference baseball action. The Fighting Scots, ranked No. 8 in the latest NCBWA/D3Baseball.com poll, won the opener 15-1 in seven innings before claiming game two 18-6 in eight frames.

GAME ONE

Kenyon nearly got the game's first runs in the third as Max Warren and Matt Contreras reached base to start the frame. But a few batters later, and with the bases loaded, Wooster pitcher Michael Houdek induced a foul ball down the first-base line which was caught by Jamie Lackner.

Then in the fourth, a two-run Garrett Crum broke the scoreless tie and got the visitor's offense rolling over the next few innings.

With a 2-0 lead, the Fighting Scots retired Kenyon in order during the home half of the fourth, before pouring on six more in the fifth.

Chandler Dippman started the scoring as he rounded home on a wild pitch, and a few batters later, Lackner drew a bases-loaded walk. Highlighting the inning was a three-run bomb to right field by Drew Tornow which pushed the score 8-0.

Over the sixth and seventh innings, the visitors added seven more runs to add to their lead. Kenyon's lone run of the game came in the final frame as Jason Clebowicz hit a two-out double to right center plating Jackson Celestin.

GAME TWO

The Lords got their first lead of the series right from the get-go before Wooster got in gear around the midway point.

Matt von Roemer doubled and then advanced to third on a throwing error by the Fighting Scots' left fielder and in the next at-bat, Patrick O'Leary grounded out to first bringing in his teammate.

Kenyon had runners in scoring position over the next two innings but didn't capitalize. With the score still at 1-0 heading to the fourth, Wooster seized control with eight runs.

Ryan Ostendorf tied the game with an RBI triple and in the next plate appearance, Jake Stuursma brought him home with a single to the gap at shortstop. A couple batters later, Nick Strausbaugh drove in two with a single and that was followed with a two-run home run from Michael Wielansky. Wooster's eight-run inning was capped off by Dan Harwood scoring on a wild pitch.

Unlike the first game, the Lords were able to respond with four runs in the fourth. Contreras and O'Leary each had RBI singles while Gaige Howard drew a bases-loaded walk and von Roemer connecting with a sacrifice fly plating Jono Chafe. Those efforts cut the deficit to 9-6.

Each team tallied a single run in the fifth before Wooster once again pulled away. From the sixth through the eighth innings, the Fighting Scots outscored the Lords 9-0.

Highlighting the sixth was a two-run homer from Stuursma. Lackner added a solo shot in the seventh and in the eighth; Wooster had four run-scoring hits to help push its lead to 18-6.

The same two teams will meet again on April 17 for another NCAC doubleheader at McCloskey Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
