GAMBIER, Ohio – Facing a 7-3 deficit and a stable goalie in Alexa L'Insalata, the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team mounted a comeback Saturday afternoon at Mavec Field. The Ladies twice closed within two goals of Oberlin College, but could get no closer as the Yeowomen held on for an 11-9 North Coast Athletic Conference win.
The Kenyon charge got started slowly at the start of the second half and gradually picked up steam. Within the first three minutes of the half, seniors
Gia Biaggi and
Allie McLane hooked up for a goal that put the score at 7-4. Biaggi set up the play and McLane, who led the Ladies with three goals, two assist and five points, finished it off.
Oberlin (10-1, 4-1 NCAC) then scored three of the game's next four goals with two coming off the stick of Maggie Mullard. In the middle of that brief Oberlin run, McLane snuck in another Kenyon shot, this time off an assist from freshman
Maggie Grabowski.
With 20 minutes left to play and the Ladies down 10-5, the momentum began to shift. In a span of roughly three minutes, Kenyon scored three times.
Avery Morgan,
Kat Englert and McLane were responsible for those tallies that brought the Ladies within two at 10-8.
At the 15:15 mark, Oberlin got another goal from Mullard, who finished with a game-high five scores. Following that, the Yeowomen went into stall mode and killed as much clock as possible.
When Kenyon did get possession of the ball, L'Insalata was there to shut them down. The Ladies had seven shots over the last 15 minutes of play. One shot was blocked by a defender, one sailed wide and four, including two at point-blank range, were saved by L'Insalata. The other Kenyon shot, which came from sophomore
Cassie Hudson-Heck found its way into the net and closed out all scoring with 5:30 left on the clock.
Kenyon (6-6, 2-2 NCAC) ended up outshooting Oberlin, 30-22, but L'Insalata notched 13 saves to keep her team in front. At the other end of the field, sophomore
Carina Barnes made three saves for the Ladies.
In addition to leading the team in points, McLane's two assists gave her 12 for the year and 49 for her career. That total puts her in sole possession of second place among Kenyon's list of all-time assist leaders.
The Ladies will now prep for two more home games next week. They'll host Ohio Wesleyan University on Tuesday and then celebrate Senior Day prior to Saturday's game with Allegheny College.
In Saturday's 11-9 loss to Oberlin College, Kenyon senior Allie McLane tallied team-highs
of three goals, two assists and five points. Her two assists gave her 49 for her career and
put her in second place on the program's list for all-time assist leaders.
