Capital sweeps doubleheader over Ladies

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After winning a pair of games yesterday, the Kenyon Ladies were hoping to continue that on Sunday. But the Capital Crusaders denied Kenyon that chance as they swept a non-conference twin bill at Clowson Field. Capital won 10-5 in the opener before cruising in game two by an 8-0 count.

GAME ONE

Capital scored all of its runs between the third and fifth innings in the opener as they earned a 10-5 victory.

The Ladies opened the game in good form as freshman Lauren Graf singled up the middle on a 1-0 count plating Britny Patterson and Madi Maldonado.

That 2-0 advantage, though, was erased starting in the third frame by the Crusaders. Pam Vickers led off the inning with a single, and two batters later, Bailey Walter drove her in with a single to center field. Capital then tied the game on a run-scoring hit from Kristen Mellott. The four-run third inning was capped off by a two-run two-bagger from Katherine Boyer.

A 4-2 lead was extended to 7-2 in the fourth. Walter drove in two with an RBI double and Marisa Koss grounded out at the circle which brought home Walter.

Grace Pilz pulled the Ladies' deficit to 7-5 in the fifth as she socked a homer to left center which drove in Patterson and Amanda Ogata in the process. That, however, would be the final scoring of the game for Kenyon.

In the fifth, Natalie Mabry and Walter each contributed run-scoring singles, and later Mabry scored on a wild pitch.

Capital tallied 17 hits in the win as Walter and Boyer each had three hits. For Kenyon, Pilz was the only batter to record multiple hits (2).

GAME TWO

The Ladies' offense was nowhere to be found in the second game as they tallied just one hit.

On the other side, the Crusaders found all of the scoring they needed in the second frame. After retiring Kenyon in order in the top of the inning, Capital cranked out six runs on five hits to gain a big lead.

Sarah Jasinski led off the second reaching on an error and two batters later, Chevonne Hayslett drove her in with a bunt to second base. Capital added an RBI single a couple batters later before two more scored on a Kenyon error. Koss and Jasinski capped off the scoring with a pair of run-scoring singles.

For Kenyon, the only hit they were able to attain came in fourth as Ogata tallied her eighth double of the year.

The Crusaders then closed the game in the sixth scoring two runs on a fielding error and wild pitch.

Amber Martinelli (8-4) got the win for the home team as she tossed a complete game, struck out three and induced 11 groundouts.

Next up for the Ladies is an NCAC doubleheader on April 5 when they host Denison University starting at 3:30 p.m.
