GAMBIER, Ohio -- Senior
Allie McLane stole the show for the Ladies on "Senior Day" for the Kenyon women's lacrosse team on Saturday, but her five-goal effort was not enough to hold off a late push from the Allegheny Gators as Kenyon fell 10-9.
Â
Allegheny took its first lead of the second half when Maddie Olsen scored the eventual game-winning goal with just 1:13 remaining. The Gators won the ensuing draw control, before Kenyon forced a turnover and gave themselves one last chance to tie with 27 seconds left.
Â
After a frantic sequence,
Maggie Grabowski drew a foul and, with the free space in front of her, moved towards the cage and beat the keeper. But the shot was ruled dead due to a foul and the goal did not count. A last second free-position shot from Grabowski then went wide to end the contest.
Â
Both teams played tight throughout the match, with the largest lead on either side maxing out at just two goals.
Â
Allegheny held a 4-2 edge with under five minutes to play in the first half, but Kenyon was able to flip the switch and tie it up. McLane scored with 3:43 left off a pass from
Cassie Hudson-Heck and with 32 ticks left,
Mary Grace Detmer scored on a free-position shot knotting up the score at 4. Â
Â
Kenyon didn't slow down after the break, as they scored three goals from
Lucy Somers, Hudson-Heck and McLane in the first 4:07 of the second half. Allegheny did score one goal of their own, but found themselves trailing the Ladies 7-5 with about 25 minutes left.
Â
The back-and-forth action continued and the Gators wasted no time tying the game back up at 7-7 with 2 goals separated by 2:51 of game time.
Â
Kenyon would take the lead twice more in the final 16:21 of the second half, but each time their one goal lead was matched with an eventual game-tying goal from the Gators before Olson's game-winner provided the difference.
Â
Individually, Somers, Detmer, Hudson-Heck, and
Avery Morgan each scored one goal in support of McLane's five. Somers added three assists and Grabrowski also had two helpers in a multi-point effort.
Carina Barnes recorded six saves in the loss.
Â
The Gators received four-goal games from both Olson and Shelby Piper while outshooting Kenyon 37-to-24. Kaelin Clogan stopped seven shots in the victory.
Â
The teams are now tied for fourth place with The College of Wooster in the NCAC standings, one half-game back of third place currently held by Wittenberg University. The top four teams qualify for the NCAC postseason tournament.
Â
Kenyon will finish their regular season on the road next week with contests against Denison University and Wittenberg University.
Allie McLane matched her career high with five goals on Saturday but the Ladies were dealt a tough 10-9 defeat
at the hands of Allegheny College at Mavec Field on Senior Day.
