GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon baseball team recorded four home runs in each game of a doubleheader on Wednesday as the Lords swept Wilmington College (7-28) at McCloskey Field in non-conference action. Kenyon won the opener 10-3 before claiming game two 20-7. The wins stopped an eight-game losing streak and moved the team's record to 15-20.
Additionally, the eight combined home runs in the twin bill was the highest total recorded with archived stats dating back to 2001. The previous was six when the Lords had three homers in a doubleheader at Hiram College on April 29, 2012.
GAME ONE
The Lords scored three runs in the second, third and fourth innings as freshman
Patrick O'Leary led the charge going 3-for-3 with a homer, triple, two RBI and three runs scored.
O'Leary put Kenyon up 1-0 with his three-bagger to right center in the second before
Alec Manning absolutely crushed a two-run shot to left center. In the third, the Fightin' Quakers came back with two runs of their own with a solo homer and RBI single.
With a 3-2 lead, the home team pushed across three more in the bottom of the third.
Gaige Howard had an RBI single and a few batters later,
Eric DelRosso drove in two with a two-out single to right center.
Then in the fourth,
Phillip Nam and O'Learly highlighted the frame with two more home runs. Nam tallied Kenyon's final run in the sixth with another solo shot to left field.
On the mound,
Jesse Bogacz struck out seven batters over five frames while
Ross Scheinberg closed the seven-inning game fanning two and induced four groundouts and flyouts. Offensively, the Lords also got multi-hit performances from
Mikey Arman,and Howard.
GAME TWO
Matt Contreras had a pair of three-run homers to lead Kenyon as the team collected 20 runs on 21 hits. O'Leary and
Matt von Roemer also tallied a trio of hits while Arman,
Andrew Petersdorf and Andrew Siciliano came up with two. Arman and Petersdorf also had a home run each.
Wilmington got the first lead of the game in the second as Jake Robinson was able to drive in Shane Hale with an RBI double.
But just an inning later, the Lords came back to plate four runs. In the third, Nam delivered a two-run double and that was followed in the next at-bat by Arman who smoked a two-run homer to left field.
After the Lords added a run in the fourth, the home team came back to tally six in the fifth. Siciliano and Arman each had run-scoring singles while
Jackson Celestin drove in a pair with a single to left center. Kenyon led 11-1 after five frames.
Highlighting Kenyon's efforts the rest of the way was Contreras' three-run homers in both the seventh and eighth innings, along with Petersdorf's solo shot in the eighth.
Earning the win on the mound was
Will Allen (3-2) who tossed 5.2 innings, gave up three earned runs and fanned four. Reliever
Brad Clegg was also extremely efficient as he tossed a total of six pitches over 1.1 innings and got four outs.
Next up for the Lords is another doubleheader this coming Saturday against Wittenberg University starting at noon.
Senior Andrew Petersdorf was one of six players to record a home run on Wednesday as the Lords swept two games against
Wilmington. As a team, Kenyon had a whopping .921 slugging percentage and scored 30 runs.
