GAMBIER, Ohio – DePauw University won both games of a North Coast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader against Kenyon College on Sunday. The Tigers rallied for a 7-4 win in the opener before shutting out Kenyon 4-0 in game two.
The losses moved Kenyon's final record to 13-27, its most losses since 2012, and 5-11 in NCAC play.
GAME ONE
Kenyon held a 4-3 lead heading to the seventh, but a two-run bomb by DePauw's Sidney Holler helped the Tigers get back in front.
DePauw got out to a 2-0 lead in the first after a couple Ladies errors. After a pair of throwing miscues from third base, Holler came up to bat with two out and found a two-bagger to right center scoring two.
That 2-0 score remained the same until the fifth when DePauw added one more to its total. In that span, the Kenyon offense was retired in order three times and only managed a couple of base runners against Tiger pitcher Brooke Bandy.
With a 3-0 lead in the sixth, DePauw decided to make a few defensive changes. Those substitutions failed though.
Madi Maldonado singled and in the next at-bat,
Amanda Ogata reached on an error. That was followed by an RBI single from
Britny Patterson. Down 3-1, the Ladies then stunned DePauw as
Grace Pilz smacked a three-run homer to center field pushing the home team up 4-3.
The Tigers didn't panic though when they returned to bat in the seventh. A lead-off walk was issued and two batters later Lauren Godden singled up the middle scoring Mina Shaw. Immediately after that Holler hit a homer to center pushing DePauw back in front 6-4. By the end of that frame, they led 7-4.
Kenyon's last chance in the home half of the seventh saw Maldonado collect a hit, but that was it.
GAME TWO
Holler's solo home run to left field turned out to be all the scoring DePauw needed as they allowed just two hits to Kenyon with pitcher Devin Pieper tossing four innings and striking out five. Emma Baldwin then came in relief in the final three frames and earned her sixth save of the year.
The Tigers' pitching staff was dominant. Outside of those two Ladies hits, they allowed only a total of two runners to reach scoring position. Pieper and Baldwin combined to retire the Kenyon order in three different innings.
DePauw's 1-0 lead was doubled in the sixth as Holler connected with a fielder's choice RBI. Then in the seventh, Megan Montgomery drove in two with a single up the middle.
Kenyon's only hits came from Ogata and Maldonado. In the circle, freshman
Keely Sweet did a decent job allowing two earned runs while inducing a combined 17 groundouts and flyouts.
Grace Pilz had a huge three-run homer in game one against DePauw on Sunday but the Ladies eventually fell 7-4.
The Tigers then swept the NCAC doubleheader with a 4-0 win in game two.
