Kenyon, Wooster play to conference doubleheader split

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Kenyon Ladies were downed 7-2 in the opener against The College of Wooster before  they earned a 7-5 victory in game two on Saturday afternoon in a North Coast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Galpin Park.

GAME ONE

Kenyon (11-19, 3-3 NCAC) fell behind 4-0 after two innings of play and never recovered as Fighting Scots pitcher Maddy Chase scattered seven hits, allowed two runs and struck out six Ladies batters.

The Fighting Scots got out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Stephenie Little doubled to left field plating Chase. An inning later, Bridget Serrurier drove in a pair of runners with a two-bagger to left center. Marina Roski rounded out three-run second inning with an RBI single.

In the third, Kenyon was able to cut the deficit in half. Kenyon's first three batters – Amanda Coyle, Madi Maldonado and Amanda Ogata – each singled and Britny Patterson followed with an RBI groundout plating Coyle. In the next at-bat, Grace Pilz grounded out to the circle which allowed another run to score.

That would be it, though, for the Ladies as Wooster tallied three more. In the bottom of the fourth, Roski drove in chase with a grounder to first. Then in the fifth, Jenna Kendall connected with a sacrifice fly before Serrurier hit an infield run-scoring single.

Maldonado and Ogata led Kenyon's offensive attack with two hits each. Only three other batters recorded a hit for the Ladies.

GAME TWO

A pair of doubles from Patterson and Pilz in the seventh inning broke a 5-5 tie and allowed the Ladies to salvage their trip to Wooster.

Kenyon fell behind 1-0 heading to the third before Pilz got the Kenyon bats rolling. With two on, the sophomore belted a three-run homer to left center.

Wooster followed in the home half of the third with a pair of scores – a sacrifice fly from Roski and a runner scoring after an error – to tie the game at 3.

But again, the Ladies came right back to regain the lead. Ogata singled up the middle scoring Nicole Horita and later in the fourth, Patterson doubled bringing home Coyle.

With a 5-3 deficit, Wooster once again found a hit to tie the game. In the bottom of the sixth, Kendall hit a two-run home run to center field knotting up the score at 5.

Staying true to the earlier happenings in the game, Kenyon , for one final time, retook the lead. After Maldonado advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Ogata, Patterson connected with her second double of the game plating Maldonado. Immediately after, Pilz doubled to right field pushing across the go-ahead run.

Wooster's final shot in the bottom of the seventh resulted in Austen Whibley inducing a pair of groundouts and a popout to end the contest.

Whibley earned her fourth win of the year as she tossed the final 1.2 innings and didn't allow a hit. Four different Ladies recorded multiple hits, including a game-high three from Patterson.

Next on the schedule for Kenyon is a doubleheader next Saturday against conference-leading Wittenberg University starting at 1 p.m.
