GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College freshman
Samantha Hayes continued to fuel the Ladies' offense Sunday, but the Dominican University Stars overcame her three-goal performance by scoring two late goals in regulation and one in overtime to steal a 4-3 win at Mavec Field.
Hayes' three-goal output was the tenth occurrence in Kenyon women's soccer history and was one goal shy of Kenyon's all-time, single-game record of four goals, established by three different players.
Dominican was the first to strike Saturday. On a play that developed off a corner kick, Alyssa Messina assisted Maggie McClure for her first goal of season and a 1-0 Stars lead just seven minutes into the game.
Kenyon had an answer at the 19:31 mark. Freshman
Caroline McNeer set things up by gaining control of the ball around mid-field. She raced it up the left side and laced an on-target pass to Hayes, who got free through the middle of the Dominican defense. As Hayes approached the box, goalkeeper Abbey Brown dove forward and got a piece of the ball, but couldn't contain it. Hayes stayed with the play, gathered the rebound and scored on an empty net.
Ten minutes later, Hayes struck again, giving the Ladies their first lead. A crossing pass from freshman
Kiele Anderson found its way to sophomore
Fallon Raviol. Raviol immediately passed over to Hayes, who tapped in her second goal of the game.
The score remained 2-1 in favor of Kenyon for nearly 50 minutes. It wasn't until the 77:12 mark of the game that Hayes notched her third goal. This time, she collected a pass from sophomore
Morgan Engmann and fired a shot inside the Dominican box and past Brown, who finished the game with five saves.
A 3-1 lead with less than 13 minutes to play should have been a safe bet for the Ladies, however, the Stars had other ideas. In a 119-second span, Dominican scored twice to tie the game in regulation. Josseline Williams got the first of those two goals off an assist from Tania Paez. Alexis Hoskins then tacked on the equalizer from a put-back off a deflected shot.
Both of those goals were sliced past Kenyon freshman goalkeeper
Hannah Petrich, who entered the game after starter
Jillian Countey had to exit due to injury. Before leaving, Countey played the first 77 minutes of the game and made two saves.
In overtime, Williams scored again for her second of the game and ninth of the season. The goal came off a corner that was put in play by Samantha Hatfield. As her inbound neared the Kenyon goal, Williams got her body on it and deflected it into the net, just inside the left post.
Kenyon, which saw its record drop to 1-3-0, out-shot Dominican 18-12 for the game. Dominican, however, scored a goal on each of its final three shots and improved its season record to 4-0-1.
The Ladies will try to shake off the tough loss and look forward to another home game Wednesday evening against Washington and Jefferson College.
