GAMBIER, Ohio – A steady rainfall and soggy conditions bogged down offensive play during Wednesday's women's soccer game at Mavec Field. Before the rain came down, however, the visiting Washington and Jefferson College Presidents were able to score a goal, one that held up as the game-winner in a 2-0 victory over the host Kenyon College Ladies.
That first Washington and Jefferson goal came just 3:03 into the contest and might have taken the Ladies by surprise. A pass into the Kenyon box was booted around in traffic. It eventually came out to Josie Madden, who was at the top of the box and didn't hesitate to pull the trigger. Her quick step-and-shoot was lined into the top left corner of the Kenyon net.
The Presidents ended up out-shooting the Ladies 7-3 in the first half, but only two of those ten shots were on goal. The one Washington and Jefferson shot on goal went it, while the one Kenyon shot on goal was stopped by goalkeeper Allison Rinehimer, who finished the game with three saves and chalked up the Presidents' first shutout of the season.
Not much changed in the second half. The Presidents put up an 8-5 advantage in shots and put another tally on the scoreboard. In the game's 64th minute, they were in the Kenyon zone and putting pressure on the Ladies defense. The Presidents worked the ball from right to left and, after bouncing off several players in the box, it landed at the feet of Ashton Grimm. She blasted a shot inside the left post, where Kenyon goalkeeper
Maria Paparella got her hands on it, but was unable to stop it.
Not long after that goal, the Ladies had their best opportunity of the game, as
Campbell Fee launched a strike from the right side. Her aim was just a bit high, though, and her shot rang off the crossbar. About 13 minutes later, the same thing happened to Washington and Jefferson's Jordan Toohey.
The rain came down harder and harder as the game went on and neither team was able to establish any kind of legitimate attack over the final 10 minutes of play.
The loss dropped Kenyon to 1-4-0, while Washington and Jefferson moved to 1-2-1.
The Ladies dropped a 2-0 decision to Washington and Jefferson College
in Wednesday evening's non-conference contest at Mavec Field.
