Otterbein sweeps Ladies, remains unbeaten

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein University moved its record to 10-0 after a three-set win over Kenyon College Tuesday night in a non-conference volleyball match at the Rike Center. After claiming the first two sets by 25-17 and 25-19 scores, the Cardinals held off the Ladies in an epic final set, 32-30.

Sophomore Haley Witschey led Kenyon with a career-high 10 kills while Schuyler Stupica added eight. Third-year outside hitter Delaney Swanson chipped in with seven kills and a team-high 12 digs.

Early in the first set, the Ladies (6-2) found themselves up 6-3 following a kill from Maleah Miller. A few sequences later, things were tied at 7-7 before Otterbein went on a 7-2 run highlighted by kills from Hadley Sterrett and two service aces from Andrea Miller. Those aces brought the tally to 14-9.

Kenyon pulled the deficit to three points on a pair of occasions on kills from Swanson (15-12) and Stupica (16-13), but never got any closer as the Cardinals won 25-17. Otterbein hit a blistering .519 with just two errors in the first.

In set two, the Cardinals got out to a quick 5-1 lead after a kill from Morgen Lowenkamp. Witschey tallied a kill a little later to bring the tally to 6-4, but Otterbein followed with a big 8-1 run with Lowenkamp registering two kills and two aces during that stretch. The Ladies were never able to get back in it after that.

Third-set action turned into a treat. Competition was tight through the first third of the set with a Stupica kill bringing the score to 12-10, Otterbein. Later with the home team leading 21-15, Kenyon hit a 9-3 run to tie things up at 24-24 after a Miller kill. The next several points went back and forth until the score was knotted at 30 on a kill from Carly Uhlir. After that, however, the Cardinals held off the Ladies with kills from Emily Shuk and Miller to end the match.

Next up for the Ladies is a quick trip to Delaware to play in the Ohio Wesleyan University Invitational. Kenyon will first face Thomas More College on Friday at 7 p.m.
