Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Ladies, Saints settle on scoreless tie

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – A battle of tough defense and clutch goalkeeping between the Kenyon College and Thomas More College women's soccer teams ended in stalemate Saturday. Despite strong offensive runs from both the Ladies and the Saints, neither managed to notch the deciding goal in a scoreless, double-overtime draw.

Kenyon's Emma Klug began the game with a salvo that sailed high over the Thomas More crossbar, but the Saints controlled much of the opening offense. Thomas More attacked Kenyon's defense with rapid-fire cuts and through balls. Kenyon goalkeeper Jillian Countey kept the Saints at bay with a couple of early stops, including a crucial save at the nine-minute mark when Thomas More freshman Abby Hutcheson broke through Kenyon's back line for a golden one-on-one opportunity.

After the flurry of shots in the opening minutes, both teams fell into a dry spell. By halftime, Thomas More tallied six shots, two of them on-goal, while Kenyon shot just three times, with one on goal.

The Ladies found an offensive rhythm early in the second half and swiftly racked up shot after shot against the Saints. Within twenty minutes, Kenyon's offense levelled six strikes, but couldn't get one by Thomas More goalkeeper Aleyna Heyman. Meanwhile, the Saints could not muster another shot on goal until the 75th minute, when Countey saved an attempt from freshman Ashley Maples.

Maples's shot opened the floodgates for a furious Saints rush at the end of regulation. Thomas More's front line overwhelmed the Ladies with a steady barrage of shots, but the Ladies weathered the storm to take the match into overtime.

In the first extra period, both teams again fell into an offensive drought with neither taking a shot. Kenyon then found good looks at the beginning of the second overtime period. Two-and-a-half minutes into that session, Fee rocketed a shot and Tess Austin followed with another. To the Ladies' dismay, Heyman saved both. Thomas More responded with three shots, none finding their mark, and the match ended in a draw.

Overall, Thomas More (4-1-1) posted 22 shots with nine on goal. Kenyon (1-4-1) produced a dozen shots with half of them on goal. Countey, who just returned to the field following injury, saved the nine Thomas More shots on goal, while Heyman controlled Kenyon's six on her end.

The Ladies will return home and play again Wednesday in a 4:30 p.m. non-conference contest against the John Carroll University Blue Streaks.
