CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – The Wabash College Little Giants, a team ranked just outside of Top-25 national polls, held the Kenyon College Lords to 160 yards of total offense Saturday while cruising to a 62-7 win at Hollett Little Giant Stadium. The win was Wabash's 12th straight, dating back to 1977, against Kenyon.
Things didn't start well for either team as they both fumbled away their opening drives. Kenyon was unable to capitalize, but Wabash was. The Little Giants used the Kenyon turnover to set up camp on the Lords' 30-yard line. Two plays later, Ike James ran in the first score of the game from six yards out.
That left the score at 6-0 after one quarter play. Wabash then broke things open early in the second quarter, using another Kenyon fumble to run the score up to 20-0. The Little Giants completed a 14-play, 84-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run from Bobby Blum. On the ensuing kickoff, Kenyon fumbled the ball away and Wabash fell on it at the Lords' 31-yard line. Two minutes after their previous touchdown, the Little Giants struck again, this time on a Dylan Buresh seven-yard catch from quarterback Austin Nightingale.
Before halftime, Wabash (2-0) tacked on two more touchdowns to move ahead 34-0, while the Lords' offense continued to sputter. The Little Giants held Kenyon to just 23 plays, three first downs and 56 yards of offense during eight first-half possessions.
In the third quarter, Wabash left no doubt about the outcome, scoring on four straight possessions. Blum ran one in from 44 yards away, while Austin Hoover and Tyler Downing scored on runs of thee and seven yards, respectively. Between those runs, Nightingale connected on another scoring strike, one that covered 25 yards with Nathan Melchi on the receiving end.
Overall, Wabash put up 549 yards of offense with 316 yards on the ground. Starting quarterback Weston Murphy was 15-of-20 for 201 yards and a touchdown. Nightingale only threw two passes, but both went for touchdowns. Blum and James combined for 124 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
The Lords (0-3) avoided the shutout with a fourth-quarter touchdown. After a Wabash punt, Kenyon started its next-to-last drive on its own 46-yard line. Freshman running back
Jimmy Andrews and senior back-up quarterback
Sam Appel then moved the Lords down the field. Andrews carried the ball three times in the drive and covered 25 yards. Appel completed two passes for 25 more yards and then, on the ninth play of the drive, crossed the goal line with a one-yard run.
Kenyon starting quarterback
Thomas Merkle ended up throwing for 89 yards, completing 15 of his 25 attempts with no touchdowns or interceptions. Appel finished 6-for-9 with 39 passing yards. On the ground, Andrews had 38 yards on eight carries, while
Nat Henry had 20 yards on three runs.
Ian Robertson led the receiving corps with five catches for 34 yards.
The Lords defense was paced by
Curt Williams, who recorded a game-high 15 tackles.
Jacob LaPoint notched a sack and
Dustin Clute forced the fumble in Wabash's opening drive.
After three road games, the Lords finally get to play a home game next week. They'll celebrate Homecoming Weekend with a 2 p.m. contest against Wittenberg.
