DELAWARE, Ohio – The Kenyon Ladies volleyball team got plenty of contributions from across the lineup on Saturday as they rallied for a five-set win over Grove City College and downed Adrian College in four sets at the Ohio Wesleyan University Bishop Invitational. The two victories improved Kenyon's record to 8-3.
MATCH ONE
Against Grove City,
Maleah Miller and
Haley Witschey each tallied 11 kills while senior
Jensen Shurbert dished out 45 assists. Defensively,
Rachael Thorson came up with 26 digs while first-year
Carly Uhlir added 21 as the Ladies prevailed in five sets.
In the first set, Grove City hit a late run to pull within two, 22-20, but the Ladies fended them off and prevailed 25-20 with a couple of errors helping Kenyon close the set.
The second set was long winding. Kenyon was down 24-22 late before tying things up on a Wolverines attack error. Miller later tied the set again at 28-28, but Grove City got kills from Jamie Robatisin and Laura Buchanan to end the second and tie the match.
Buchanan and Mikayla Bartley helped the Wolverines prevail in set three with a combined seven kills while the Ladies contributed 11 errors in the 25-22 loss.
Down 2-1 in the match, Kenyon fought back to win the next two stanzas. In the fourth, competition was close throughout.
Schuyler Stupica and
Elyse Davidson totaled eight kills and aided the Ladies' offense to an attack percentage of .364. On the other side, the Wolverines hit .147 and fell 25-22. Then in the fifth, the Ladies dominated to a 15-8 victory. Nursing a 10-7 advantage, Kenyon went on a 5-1 run to end the match. Uhlir led the Ladies with three kills.
MATCH TWO
Against Adrian, the Ladies fell in the first before reeling off three straight victories. Uhlir led Kenyon with 11 kills while Miller and Witschey each tallied nine. Defensively, Thorson added 21 digs while senior teammate
Ashley Martens contributed 16. Shurbert once again put Kenyon's offense in motion with 39 assists.
Down 1-0, The Ladies got off on the right foot in set two as they raced out to a 7-1 lead. They continued to hold that lead until a late rally from the Bulldogs. Trailing 17-9, Adrian hit a 13-4 run to go up 22-21 after a Ladies error. Despite losing a sizeable advantage, Kenyon regrouped and scored four of the next five points to win 25-23.
In the third, the Ladies led from start to finish. Witschey's kill gave the Ladies a double-digit 20-10 lead and they later won 25-16. Kenyon's defense was superb as they limited Adrian to a -.022 attack percentage.
Then in the fourth, Uhlir's service ace moved Kenyon ahead 19-9.
Alexi Donnelly and Uhlir led the Ladies' attack in the final set with four kills each. As a team, Kenyon hit .308 – its best mark of the contest – in the fourth.
Next up for the team is a road date at Ohio Northern University on September 20 at 7 p.m.
The Ladies dialed up two wins to close the Ohio Wesleyan Bishop Invitational on Saturday. Kenyon
rallied for a five-set victory over Grove City before claiming a four-set win against Adrian.
