GAMBIER, Ohio – A defensive breakdown just a minute into the second overtime helped Heidelberg University come up with a 3-2 win over Kenyon College (4-2-2) on Thursday night at Mavec Field. It was the Student Princes' first win over the Lords since October 1, 2013.
A pass to a streaking Rodrigo Meza got by the Lords' back line and Meza raced into the box and fired into the right corner lifting Heidelberg to a 5-0 record.
Heidelberg got off on the right foot just seven minutes into the contest. With Kiki Alvarado along the left side, he fired into the box and a deflection came to Cory Gilbert who did the rest. It was Gilbert's third goal this season.
Kenyon nearly tied things up with 1:19 left in the half. Sophomore
Gunner Found got a cross right in front of the net, but his sliding attempt went over the crossbar. Then, with just 34 ticks remaining,
Gabe Ivins' open shot from about 10 yards out was saved by the Heidelberg defense.
The Lords kept up that offensive tempo early in the second half.
Henry Myers found the team's first goal at the 51:43 mark as he headed home a beautiful cross from fellow senior
Woo Jeon into the right corner.
Nearly three minutes later, Myers scored again. With Jeon along the left side this time, a cross came to Myers who fired into the left corner moving the Lords ahead 2-1.
That 2-1 lead would not hold, though, for Kenyon. At 66:08, a tough foul call against
Collyn Carpenter resulted in a penalty kick for Meza who scored into the right corner.
The home team had a couple more looks the rest of the way, as well as for Heidelberg's Alexis Mendoza whose shot hit the crossbar at 83:30, but the 2-2 score remained.
In the first overtime, the Lords out-shot the Student Princes 4-0 but found nothing. Then Meza closed the game in the second extra session.
Next up for Kenyon is a home date against Wittenberg University on September 23 at 4 p.m. for both team's North Coast Athletic Conference opener.
Henry Myers scored twice on passes from fellow senior Woo Jeon on Thursday night but the Lords ended
up falling to Heidelberg University 3-2 in double overtime at Mavec Field.
