Grizzlies squeak by Ladies, 1-0

GAMBIER, Ohio – Franklin College forward Maddie Fleet, the nation's top goal-scorer from a season ago, found the only goal of the match on Tuesday afternoon as the Grizzlies edged Kenyon College 1-0 in a non-conference contest at Mavec Field. It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Kenyon did its part on Tuesday playing as well offensively as they had all season. In the first half, the Ladies looked like they would break a scoreless tie.

Brianna Maggard got the team's first good look at the 16:08 mark. Just right of the middle of the box, the junior fired near the right post but watched as Franklin's Lexi Short came up with a save.

Near the end of the first half, Morgan Engmann nearly scored twice. In the 41st minute, Engmann's shot was saved at the right post. Then at the 42:53 mark, the sophomore forward found herself one on one with Short. Her shot, though, wound up bouncing off the right post.

The Ladies kept putting pressure on the Grizzlies net but found nothing. A scoreless tie was then broke by Fleet.

Fleet got by a Kenyon defender along the left side, raced into the box and fired into the right corner at 62:22.

Down by one, Kiele Anderson nearly found the equalizer in the 78th minute. A Caroline McNeer cross bounced to Anderson but her header attempt went just high. The Ladies found one more on-goal opportunity, from Anderson again, but Jackie List saved her shot.

Kenyon out-shot Franklin 25-12 and held a 5-0 lead in corners.

Next up for the Ladies is a home date with Denison University (3-3-2, 0-1 NCAC) on September 30 at 1 p.m.
