Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Ladies pitch another shutout, settle for draw

GAMBIER, Ohio – For the fourth time in its last five games, the Kenyon College women's soccer team held its opponent scoreless. Saturday, the Kenyon defense stopped rival Denison University, but the Big Red defense returned the favor as the teams battled to a 0-0 stalemate in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) contest at Mavec Field.

The tie was the second of the season for the Ladies, who are now 3-5-2 overall and 1-0-1 in NCAC play. On the other side of the field, Denison moved to 4-3-3 overall and 0-1-1 in the conference.

The Big Red put up a 15-8 advantage in shots, but only three of those shots were on goal. The Ladies showed more accuracy, putting five of their eight shots on goal.

In the early stages of the game, Denison produced more opportunities than Kenyon, but every attempt was off the mark. Kenyon countered with a couple of shots from senior Campbell Fee. Her first shot sailed high and her second was taken from a long way out, allowing for an easy save from Denison goalkeeper Jenny Herold.

Just before the half, Kenyon generated one of its best scoring chances. Sophomore Morgan Engmann broke free in the box and let loose a shot toward the center of the goal. Herold was there to make the stop. The ball then caromed off Herold's arm and rolled to the feet of Kenyon sophomore Alyssa Sugar, who hurried to get another shot off while Herold was out of position. That shot, however, went left of its intended target.

All three Denison shots on goal occurred in the second half. Kenyon keeper Jillian Countey made, perhaps, her best save on the second of those three. In the game's 63rd minute, Denison's Kelly O'Neill gained possession of the ball at the top of the Kenyon box. With her back to the goal, she faked left, spun right and fired a shot that Countey redirected with a diving save.

Similar to the end of the first half, Kenyon had another great opportunity at the end of the second half. With just a little more than a minute left, freshman Kiele Anderson booted a 20-yard shot that ended up hitting the top of the Denison net and skidded away.

In the overtime periods, the same story held up. Denison took three shots with none being on target. Kenyon managed one shot that turned into the last of five saves for Herold.

Countey's three saves Saturday gave her 36 for the season. The shutout was her fifth and it lowered her goals against average to 0.36, which now ranks as the best mark in the conference.
