Kenyon falls in back and forth affair to Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio – Heidleberg University (9-8) claimed a four-set victory over Kenyon College (10-5) on Thursday night in a non-conference volleyball match at Seiberling Gymnasium.

Mackenzie Bruzzio led Kenyon with 13 kills and tied for the team lead with 19 digs. Newcomer Lauren Limbach had her best performance of her young career contributing 11 kills while Haley Witschey and Schuyler Stupica added 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Jensen Shurbert registered a season-high 46 assists and 16 digs and Ashley Martens, Carly Uhlir and Rachael Thorson all had at least 14 digs.

The Ladies held minimal leads more than halfway through the first set, with their last coming at 13-12 after a Witschey kill.  A 6-0 run for the Student Princes followed, though, helping Heidelberg get in front for good. Laura Schrag started the run with a kill and a Taylor Valentine point capped off the half-dozen-point run moving the score to 18-13. Kenyon could only get as close as three points (23-20) the rest of the way.

In the second, a flurry of errors helped Kenyon tie the match up. Leading 13-10 after Limbach's kill, the Student Princes aided the Ladies with four straight errors pushing the visitor's lead to 17-10.  Heidelberg never recovered as Kenyon went on to win 25-16 while holding the home team to a .075 attack percentage in the stanza. Limbach was near perfect in the set as she tallied six kills on seven errorless swings.

With the match tied at 1-1, the Student Princes went back ahead with a 25-20 third-set win. Leading 11-10, Heidelberg hit a 7-2 run to take control. Valentine and Jordann Gudorf started the stretch with a pair of kills and later Taylor Arbogast added two of her own. Kenyon did not helped itself as they hit -.018 and had more errors (11) than kills (9).

Then in the fourth, Heidelberg closed the match. Competition, much like the first set, was close as Kenyon had a 13-11 lead after a Witschey kill. A little later, a Shurbert point tied the set at 19-19. After that though, the home team found four straight points including a pair of service aces by Valentine.

Next up for the Ladies is a tri-match with Mount Vernon Nazarene University and Capital University this coming Saturday starting at 11 a.m. at Tomsich Arena.
